Evening all,

Yes a newbie,
Yes an Irishman,
Yes can be grumpy (occasionally).

Just a quick opening observation, there appears to be an awful lot of members, Is this an indication that Fiat owners have to rely on each other to address issues? or just a very popular brand. Anyways, glad I have an opportunity to join. Looking forward to chatting ie. giving out!

Hopefully, your title will not reflect your temperament because you are a Fiat owner.
You will find some very helpful people within this forum and maybe, just maybe, one day you will need a hint or two to help you sort something out. You will then understand why so many like minded people are members here.
I'm a fully experienced mechanic of too many years, but it hasn't stopped me asking for a guide here, or, advice there.
May I welcome you to the best Fiat forum around. (y)
Cheers
George

Thank you for the welcome Oletimer !

On my third Fiat now, first was the wonderful 127 mk2 then a 2004 Panda (slow but super) and now the mobile glasshouse Multipla. "I always wanted one" I told the seller, he looked at me as if I had five heads.

I am not used to forums at all, I find them difficult to manage, and what is the story with all these emocions? Are they really neccessary? Hmm you might spot a bit of grumpiness creeping in there, apologies.

With regard to a grumpy oul fella buying a Multipla, I believe it is a two edged sword. If the car dosen't drive me insane then my intolerence will. It's a win win really

Right then, out with the spanners!

Part one

Well it has been a while since I first posted on the forum. Since then I have turned 50 and would like to say thanks for all your birthday messages ( 1 automated, always welcome though!). So let's get straight down to brass tacks, Sofia my Multipla (04 new shape) always wanted one (stop laughing) so sold my excellent Panda and dived in..........right into the deep end! I bought cheap, no tax, no NCT (MOT), no log book, no service history, limited mechanical knowledge/tools and a new mechanic. What a roller coaster of a ride, Edgar ( Latvian mechanic ) has an open mind and likes to give things a go so the rear (swing-arm?) bushes were 1st on the list. "I'll ring you when I'm finished, about 3pm" at 6pm I rang to check on progress. He sounded upset ans asked could I collect tomorrow, hmmm not a good start.

Part two

Collected the following morning c/w new drop links new rear bushes new wishbone new flexipipe and a bill for 300 euros (not too bad I thought). Car tested by NCT, car failed by NCT. New bottom ball joint needed and emissions fail. Super Edgar to the rescue, new Lambda new B/B joint and off we go. NCT fail, emissions fail, only one thing for it, new cat (170e fitted).......NCT passedAll is well that ends well or so they say...........or not, yes the dreaded bing bing, the sound that all? Fiat drivers hear at some stage or a lot. Plug in the tester, drive-train coolant blah blah........off to the shop so! I am outside the motor factors in Trim and the only key I have snaps in the door-lock in the lashings of rain and I need to be somewhere else soon. It is moments like this that I miss the Panda. Keep a cool head and approach the problem logically. Sorted, through calmness.

Part three

New coolant temp sensor (bit worried about this one and help would be appreciated. Not sure if disinterested assistant gave me a coolant or an engine temp sensor. Anyways I couldn't find where engine sensor is fitted so I could compare the two so fitted it anyway. Here's the issue (about time they all groan) I only really do short trips 20-30 miles without issue, longer trips 100 miles or more and .....bing bing. This has happened four or five times of late but most recently I have had the misfiring warning and to be honest it does sound a little rough (new coil?) With regard to the coolant issue I am thinking a new thermostat as I have replaced everything else..........and like most Multipla owners near bankrupt. Answers on a postcard as usual to Grumpy Old Irishman. 04 1.6 Petrol

Hello again G.o.L.

You seem to be having a disastrous start to your Ugly Bug 'career?'

I've had 4 and am now on #5 and, in all that time, I've never suffered as much agro as you appear to be suffering.
I won't go as far as apologising for the Fiat brand but you seem to have found a real Friday motor.
On the plus side, there's not much more can go amiss - hopefully.
My only negative point on Bug #5 , it's not as quick as my last one, this engine looks like a replacement unit and it just doesn't have the 'go' that I got used to. It's also a bit smokey on heavy acceleration.

A word about emoticons - I use them for fun, well, what else are they for?
Hope your Bug serves you well, I haven't had a petrol since my first one so I'm maybe not the best to advise you regarding it's upkeep.
Best wishes
George
