I'm not even sure I have the right car. It's a 51 plate that I bought from my Brother. My problem is how slow it is when cold, you might as well have a mobility scooter, it's so slow. When there is temperature, it moves how it should. Does anyone know what I can do to help here? It's a 1.9 td Thanks in advance.

It's a diesel. They need heat to work properly.
1. Is it easy to start? If not, it is likely that the heater plugs are not operating and these are needed to initially heat the cylinder and sometimes to run a little afterwards to help warm-up.

2. Is the thermostat stuck open. If so, this will prolong warm-up, reducing power for longer.

Thanks for the reply. Yes it starts easy, no problem there. The temperature gauge seems to be working normally too. I'm at a loss as to why it takes so long to perform properly.

How long does it take to get upto temperature? miles wise?

But it could be a sensor lying - but not failed that the ECU is detecting it as been failed or implausable

Only thing i could think of is possible over thick oil? But that'd clear quiet quickly tbh

Thanks for the reply Ziggy, I have however found the issue. After trawling through many threads and posts I came across one about the MAF sensor, and after disconnecting it, the car is running how it should, I want to say a big thank you to Alan for this, the car is transformed

I'm going to leave it disconnected and just tape it up for now as Alan said it wouldn't be a problem to do this. I'm so happy I joined this forum and found the issue so quickly, thanks again.

The mass air flow sensor is actually quiet important to the fuel mixing of the car

with it disconnected, the car is making an educated guess as to whats in the cylinders

Trouble is - it could be running richer then normal = Lack of MPG
The check engine light will also be on - so MOT wise, it'll fail
It may forwell cause long term issues like blocking up the cat with soot

So really - if it was me
Either get a tested and guarentee'd working sensor 2nd hand
or just buy a new friggin sensor

I doesn't bring up the engine light at all. As it was before, I had my foot to the floor and not a great deal was happening. The temp gauge needed to be between a quarter and half way up before the car would perform, which could take quite a few miles to achieve.

im surprised it isn't bringing the EML on....

If you cant get it through emission tests at mot time, then i know where i'd start looking

If your happy leaving it disconnected, leave it disconnected

Ziggy
Yeah, I might reconnect it for that, or maybe have a new one in place. I couldn't continue with it like that, it was so bad it was embarrassing on the road with cars behind.
