Hi all, Thomas here , Cape Town South Africa. Im headed strait to the Punto section Iv been on a disaster recovery mission of note, with my GF's Grande Punto 06 1.4 .

1 piston connecting rod had a somehow come loose and was bouncing around in the sump for a time until a piece punctured a hole in the sump large enough to loose all oil in a moment driving at 100kmh, pull over said to be great plumes of "smoke" coming from engine bay,(coolant, as later seen a hole in the crankcase too, and a bent valve. so i had some work to do. its all back together again, i just have some niggly issues with power steering and altenator connections and a earth wire which i cant find a spot for.

Cheers and thanks for having me :)

So here's some pics of the damage.

happen'd like so.... didn't know it at the time but the first sign of trouble was rough starting in the mornings, fine starting the rest of the day. went on like this for some time then suddenly while out one day rather alarming clanking sound started as we arrived at destination, oh gee worried , we limped home, and It was time for me to investigate the noise, didn't take long before i saw the dipstick dry. gulp. omg. fill up with oil. ha seems fine now, no more rough starting in the morning, clanking noise disappeared. cool. few days go by and take a saturday trip to watch the regional mx racing. 140 km round trip, free way the whole way. about 125km homeward bound, cruising down the freeway she describes loss of power and pulled over right away and plumes of "smoke" didn't last long, with a trail of oil leading to where she stopped. such a blow out that there was even oil on the rear of the car all the way up to the roof. wow i arrive on scene we tow the car home. so it starts.. If I could have paid someone to do this, I would have. had no choice financialy but to DIY..

Uhh. pics to follow just gotta post 5 times before i can paste urls in a thread. hehe

Cool thanks for the welcome and the link to the earth points. Re: earth locations. I have 2 more not shown in the thread. 1 backside of cylinder block under the inlet manifold and another on top of the A/C compressor. any how thats all good.

My issue is with the amber engine malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) otherwise known by the fiat punto owners handbook as Injection system fault.

Im pretty sure Iv'e got a duff O2 sensor. Iv'e tested most others. I just don't have a propane torch to test the O2 sensors.
The car will not rev above 4000rpm check engine light on. Exhausted all options I have before the last choice is to talk to the car OBD.

Hha everything is awsome! just wasting a post so i can link the urls for the pics.

Since this is the 1.4 8v engine you need to perform phonic wheel re-learn (search multiecuscan). Maybe that's your problem about MIL.

No I have no access to multiecuscan.
Funny thing is I just a month ago sold my ELM 327 OBDll interface, after many years of not needing it....... #Facepalm

yeah but i'll find someone local to let me at their scantool seems the only way now.

Does anyone know another way to test O2 sensors, apart from propane blow torch? hair dryer does nothing as this just blasts the sensor with clean air so it reads 0 volts in anycase. I wonder if I can stick it at the tailpipe of another vehicle and check that it can reach the required 1 volt.. lol
oh wait maybe i'll just leave them in place and test the signal wire for a volt, at the same time seeing what happens when they are unplugged

here's a cool website for good explanations about a lot of topics. just for anyone's future reference. http://www.aa1car.com/

Cheers

Just buy an elm adaptor to read voltages/ fuel trims etc

Or... you can switch lambda sensors (after cat to post)

remember that voltage is only one way to tell if a sensor is good. speed is an other one etc.

but anyway you have to execute phonic wheel re-learn...

hi,
Iv borrowed a friends ELM327 interface, and read the DTC's .
camshaft position, crankshaft position correlation error , didn't note the code though, .. who'd agree that's a computer way of saying - ##The Timing's Out.

I would have no problem lining it up again if I could only see any timing marks on the cam sprocket. its the VVT setup. I actually see too many marks on the sprocket can't decide which one

When I put it all together, cylinder 1 & 4 piston was TDC, then I put the head on with cylinder 1's cam lobe pointing up.

Oh and this looks important

I see 3 paint marks and 4 indents like the one at the bottom on the pic

Here the trouble codes i keep getting.

The engine starts fine, sounds fine. iv got 10-11bars of pressure on all cylinders . just wont rev above 4 500rpm mostly only to 4000rpm

I really did try the phonic re-learn proceedure, didn't help. i will try again tho.

Appreciate any suggestions :)
