Hi everyone. Just joined this group and wanted to ask any owners if they've had experience of this...

Fiat 500 first service at main dealer, 13,000 miles by my wife who has a very gentle style - not hard driving at all. Dealer says both pads and discs now need replacing. Seriously ?

Am I just being ripped off by a main dealer or do brakes on this little car really need replacing so soon ?

Many thanks !

Hi,
modern brakes do tend to go relatively quickly..,

the other thing is they also seem to corrode / rust relatively easily..,
over a weekend of inactivity for example,
SO the mileage could be pretty much irrelevant if the rusty surface eats into the disk , AND the rough surface takes away the pad material,

13K Does seem low.. BUT there is no guarantee they are REALLY LOW either. have you got "quoted" measured thicknesses..?,

as a side note - I've had MOT fails for LOW pads , when on doing the job there is 4+mm remaining..

Charlie - Oxford

The life of discs especially seems to vary a lot.

My Panda, as far as I can tell from its service record (2nd owner), is on the original discs at over 90k miles, and my Jeep likewise, but my other car has a big appetite for front discs.

Environment and driving style also play a part. Driving in a dusty/gritty area, or stop/start traffic, will quickly destroy discs and pads. Long steady journeys in cleaner air will be kind to them.

something doesnt sound right. perhaps go and get a 2nd opinion?

Pads, maybe, I had to replace the pads on my Wife's old POP after just 16k, but the factory fitted discs were absolutely fine.

I always swap out my own discs and pads these days because I want to be as sure as I can be of the quality of what I'm putting on the car. Sometimes, completely dependent on the marque of car mind you, I will buy genuine discs/pads as put on the car at the factory. My Saab for instance, I only ever replace the pads with genuine GM pads which I buy off the famous auction site for a fraction of the price they'd cost from the dealership (and yes, they are always genuine, not cheap copies!).

As far as discs are concerned, I am very wary of a lot of cheap Chinese iron that is out there. I tend these days to buy EBC discs (though I won't use EBC pads because they didn't last very long on our old MX5 and seemed to finish the discs quickly too). EBC do have a very strong reputation and the discs supplied from the UK are I believe all manufactured here in the UK using quality iron.

I too would get a second opinion on what the dealer has told you and I don't mean going to your local High Street do it all makes tyre and brake shop (although there are some that offer a lifetime ownership of pads replacement deal), a friendly local mechanic with a good reputation will do. You can easily buy quality discs and pads for the 500 (dependent on which trim), for about £65 and of course if you are mechanically adept (such as me :D), you don't have the associated labour cost.

Clearly letting a dealership swap out your discs and pads will undoubtedly come with an eye watering bill because at the end of the day, this is exactly where some dealerships make the money. It really isn't a hard or rocket science job to do for a competent home mechanic. Swapping out front discs and pads on a 500 shouldn't take any longer than an hour, certainly didn't take me any longer than an hour to change the discs and pads on my 9-3, half hour each side, and that car is twice the size and weight of a 500 Twinair!

Read this thread to find out why this sometimes happens.

As to whether your discs & pads need replacing now, it's impossible to tell without physically examining them.

The certain way to get ripped off by a main dealer is to let them do this job - we've had folks here who've been quoted not far shy of an incredible £500 .

As has been said already, you can buy decent quality pads & discs for the 1.2 from EuroCarParts (hint: look for the Pagid parts) for the price of a tank of fuel. 1.2 discs are under £25 a pair, so if there is any doubt whatsoever about their condition, it's false economy not to change them at the same time. The TA parts are a little more expensive at around £85.

They're dead easy to fit; brake replacement doesn't get any simpler or more straightforward than this, but if you aren't able or don't want to do it yourself, any independent mechanic worthy of the name should be able to do this for £50 or so in labour charges - it's an hour's work at most.

Long story, and I won't bore anyone.

We have a Clio and we've had her since new in 2001. I have all the records of what we've done/spent and when and at what mileage. She's done 95,000 miles.

First pads at 22,000 miles
First discs at 49,000 miles

We live in a VERY hilly area and brakes get used a great deal.

Cheers,
Mick.

Gary , did you get a result..??,

Hi Charlie, got a mechanic coming to take a look next week. Certainly won't be getting the dealer to do it !! Cheers

Just to add, our 2009 1.4 500C has covered 36,000 miles now and the original brake pads are still over 50% and the original discs are fine with just a small wear ridge at the edge.

Our other car, a 2010 Mazda MX-5 did 40,000 miles on it's original front pads and now at 47,000 miles the original rear pads are still over 50% and original discs are unworn.

Both our cars are driven spiritedly, so worn brakes on your gently driven car at 13,000 miles seems unlikely. I'll be interested to read your report after a second opinion.

Kev.

dont forget though, fiat parts are not as good as mazda parts = )

Fiat reported 15% wear on UFI's brakes at 3000km. Based on that, around 13,000 miles seems about right for a set of front pads. I get 60mpg so I don't waste a lot of fuel on braking.

If you're driving for economy, and the brakes are properly lubricated, you should see at least 50,000 miles out of the front pads.

I wonder if TA85 brakes are only just up to the job and therefore not lasting all that long. If the brakes were sticking/ binding, I wouldn't be seeing 60mpg on a tank. I'd normally expect many more miles from a set of pads, but it could also be that these cars just don't have the pad life typical of other cars.
