Hi,
You'll have to excuse me if I'm not using the right words here, but don't know much about cars. I have a 2004 8v punto, a couple of weeks ago I noticed that now and then when just sitting still with the engine running the needle on the rev counter was going up and down. If I pressed the gas it would stop. The last couple of days it's happening every time I'm sitting still, I press the gas it stops for a couple of seconds then starts again. Any ideas? Thanks

Hi Hibbs, I have the same issue with my 54 plate Punto!.. any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated, good luck!..

When I start my car the rev counter shows a bit over 1000 and after 10 seconds or so it drops down to just over 800, The engine sound does not change though,

Similarly while idling if i slowly press on the accelerator the engine speed increases but the rev counter does not move and then suddenly moves to about 1500.

on startup sitting at around 1000-1500 is perfectly normal

Once its warmed up it should sit around the 750-900 rpm mark

The Rev counter i've personally seen my self just lag a lil bit, but once its corrected itself its normally fine

It could be a sticky actuator on the rev counter

Glad to know i'm not the only one had this LOL....had it happen 3 times in the few months i've had the car, but a quick press of the accelerator clears it. unless it starts doing it all the time i'm not gonna worry about it

Its going to be a dirty throttle body and idle valve

Remove and clean it well and you should get rid of it 80-95% of the time

Mine doea this and there is very little you can about it as its all electronic ignition

Ziggy

Could you point out where this is on my engine??

Hi all, firstly happy new year to you. Hope I'm posting this question in the right place, it just seemed the right thread to do so. I've got a Punto Active 54 plate that I've done a lot to after buying it for about a grand over a year ago. Since then I've spent about the same on it: new ECU, plugs, coolsets

Sorry didn't finish that last post anyway, today my rev counter decided to start from the middle - engine running fine and counter moving but it doesn't go back to idling revs @900 ish. When ignition switched off it's stuck at 3000 revs or similar but it does respond to throttle, just higher up the scale?

Any ideas really welcome.

Just to confirm what my problem is: the engine is running fine, and idling properly. Acceleration is also fine - it's just the rev counter has decided to show 3000 revs as a start at idle, then jumps to 5000 plus on acceleration, resting back at 3000ish. It's like it's stuck in the middle, needle moves. The engine is so quiet, as it normally was, it's just the indication from the rev counter.

When the engine is off does the needle sit just below zero?

Sounds like it may possibly be a fault connection or a faulty dash....
Would be curious to see what live data would be saying too

I owt to add... if it isn't, this has happened to somebody else but he had it on his fuel guage
It dropped way below
He made a guide in thr guide section for puntos on how to correct it

Hi Ziggy and Nick, the needle was still stuck on 3000 revs when I turned the ignition off - all other dash functions were working normally. So this morning I started up and again the engine sounded just fine, and ran normally albeit with the rev counter still deciding to 'start' at 3000 revs, but moved in response to throttle. When I had time I plugged in my ELM unit and linked to my app of choice (OBD Car Doctor) to test the real time revs as you suggested Ziggy and well, it dropped back to 0 and worked perfectly! I didn't have any fault codes simply plugged it in!!

The car has done about a hundred miles since then and no problem.

I have no idea what happened but in the interests of anyone else having the same problem it started when I went down a very muddy wet road - whether this threw a bit of s#*t somewhere I don't know but there we are.

Many thanks to yourselves Dave and Ziggy for your prompt response I really appreciate you taking the time.

Cheers,

Paul
