hello everyone, i am just looking for some buying advice. my wife is going to learn to drive and wants a fiat 500 automatic. these seem quite rare second hand. can people tell me where to get the best deal, as my local fiat are not very helpful. i am looking to buy a new lounge auto in the new mint, and after reading threads possibly looking to add the sound system upgrade and the tom tom.
many thanks in advance

How much do you want to pay? How old do you want the car to be? Your best bet as a starter, is do a national search on auto trader and if you see something you like, be prepared to travel. I bought our own new pre-reg TA this way from a Fiat dealership 150 miles from where I live. Not everyones cup of tea travelling far from home, but my nearest Fiat dealerships couldn't offer the deal I got on the car we've now got so it was worth the effort.

Join British Cycling. For the £25 joining fee you get access to Fiat's Privilege discount scheme which should get you a hefty discount. Alternatively go for a pre-reg but check the build date and when it was registered.
Good luck.

Absolute must when buying pre-reg. I forgot to ask the build date (I knew when it was registered) and ended up with a delivery miles car (10 miles on clock) already 14 months old from build date :bang: though to be fair to the dealer, they did flog it to me at a very hefty discount and I battered them upward on what they originally offered me for PX on our old POP.

I just wish dealerships would be completely and totally honest and up front about stuff like this, but I guess if the prospective new owner doesn't ask......!

thanks. been looking loads. i was hoping to get one for weekend. all second hand ones seem to be around 7500-8500 with 25000-50000 miles on. this seems quite expensive as new they start at just over 10000. her brand new choice would be a 1.2 lounge in mint, auto, with upgrade hifi and the tom tom. spoke to local fiat again who just seem keen to only offer what they have in stock or group stock. never thought buying a car would be so hard work. we haven't even got to test drive an automatic. all your advice is very helpful

I'd rather join the The Fiat Motor Club (GB) for the same price and same discounts (y) With the added advantage of the guy who runs it is a member on here (Not me)

That seems too cheap to me - whilst it could be a genuine bargain, I'd be more than usually cautious.

If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

That is why it is always the responsibility of the buyer to carry out full checks before purchase. You do have to take into account certain factors though such as geographical location. There are parts of the country where cars are cheaper, especially in the private buyer market. I know this more than anyone else coming from the South Coast and now residing in the middle of the country.

There are other benefits to British cycling! e.g, 10% off at Halfords plus loads of cycling benefits if you are into cycling!!!

But that would mean I'd be giving money to cyclists, and that isn't going to happen anytime soon, and the ammount I'd save at Halfords won't recoup my £25

maybe it has some of those famous dualogic failures like the ones i experience everyday = )

This. And even more so for cars with sketchy service histories -- then the buyer will inevitably end up here creating a new thread about Dualogic and other failures etc.

Ahmett, I'm sure you have been unlucky on the Dualogic scene. Our household is now in the 4th 500 with dualogic and only ever had one issue which was resolved very quickly under warranty.

As an aside, looking forward to some Greek sunshine mid April. Staying with friends in Lindos (Rhodes) for 10 days. Must like it as it will be our second visit.(y)

Yes the issue is when something goes wrong it is a costly fix. Mind you, depends on how many miles a year you do and where you drive. I think a lot of intown driving over the years doesnt do it too well with the start stop and constant gear changes.

Nice one with the Greek sun. Are you going for Greek easter (April 12)?

Unfortunately we do not go until the 15th. However 2 yrs ago we were in Lindos for Easter and had a great time. Nice to see the way it was celebrated, singing, processions. Attended a christening also and the overall experience was a food and drink bonanza.:)
