Hey All.

I've always driven Italian, and have done a lot of research on this site for the last few years - thanks.
Eventually decided to join.
Currently driving a 00 Marea 1.8 115 on LPG and have sold my Alfa 147 JTDm 16V to get the Multipla. Long story there, also involved a Brava JTD 105 with a bad driveshaft.

Anyway, having being spoiled by the torque of the 147 (305Nm) I'm very interested in how I can upgrade the Multipla. It is an '06 facelift Multijet Eleganza. The 206Nm is very weedy! Fiat should be embarrassed, the same engine in a Zafira has 280Nm.

Along with this I have all the running gear and brakes from a Coupe 20VT :worship: I had a few years ago.
Another sad story, I killed the engine stupidly:bang:
Long story short, I want to transfer all the nice stuff off the 20VT onto the Multipla and give it a bit more uumph.
I do 90 miles a day to/from work so I need something economical but also have few chances to overtake on the country roads so need something to take off and overtake safely.

Hopefully others have done this before and can help.

Dave

First off, are you sure the Zafira isn't a 16V?, the multi only has 8v...
However, a few tuning companies can remap the Multi to either @139 or 155 bhp, I have driven a 139bhp version and it is pretty impressive, 0-60 @ 10s 180 lbt ft at 1500 rpm, great for motorways or A road overtaking, plus @40mpg, "its all about the torque"
However you would definitely need an uprated clutch..the standard ones are just about up to the job of hauling this elephant of a car...
(I should add, when I say pretty impressive, I mean as an all round balance of power/torque/economy/space/handling )

I spent ages putting together a reply to this and for some reason it didn't post!!!

Anyway, the jist of it was that the 8V in the Vauxhalls and Alfas have 120HP &280Nm.
So, the lump in the Multi should really be able to "jump" to this, assuming the clutch is up to it or replaced.
Then mapped hopefully 150HP & 330Nm. That's my goal!
Uprated clutch, running gear brakes etc needed.

Good luck with it and post your findings for us if you can.
But, I very much doubt you'll get 320nm with mapping, more like 260nm max...
A lot of remapping websites have incorrect torque figures on their specs, to big up their gains!
A 120 multi has 210 nm, or 155lbft old money and I'd expect a mapped 150 to get @280 nm/205 lb ft max ...It'll still shift pretty smartly, and shock a lot of peeps.

BTW : if you spend too long writing a post, the forum website software "forgets" it, very frustrating, so if you do it again, copy and paste it onto word or notepad before posting!!! been there...

I've tried to start this debate on the Alfa forum as well.
So, the Fiat, Alfa and Vauxhall 8V (as well as 16V) engine is essentially the same lump of metal.
What is different between the Fiat and the Alfa (or Vauxhall) which gives the Alfa 275Nm and the Fiat 205Nm as standard?
Is it turbo? Injectors? Intercooler? Or just Mapping?

Regardless, whatever it is, I should be able to unbolt it from the Alfa and bolt it onto the Fiat. Then, it should be capable of being mapped to 320Nm (or thereabouts) in the same way as the Alfa engine can be.

Am I wrong?
Obviously, clutch, suspension & brakes would need upgrading.

I really am not aware of any significant changes that would affect torque to that degree, however I have "messed" with lots of cars in my time and have undone some mods that have given me more power but have ruined the power/torque balance, e.g. tuned exhausts that give 2bhp more at 6000 revs but ruin bottom end torque...
Personally I love the bottom end torque of the multi engine (tuned or untuned), and feel it is well matched to the weight of the car, if you try to chase more torques it may move the curve up the rev range, changing the driving characteristics, for the worse?
However my guess's for the difference in power/torque are the following :
1: exhaust size
2: slightly bigger turbo (variable vane perhaps)
3: different inlet manifold
I dont think the intercooler would change the torque that much from the vaux and alfa, the multi one is pretty big anyway.
Personally I've always wanted to fit the 16v diesel version with a 6 speed gearbox....
