Hi all, new to this so sorry if i'm doing this wrong! Story goes: I brought an 08 plate 5 door T-jet Grande Punto with 34000 miles about 2 months back. The car has been running like a dream until recently! It started when i noticed a quiet squeaking noise coming from the front l-hand side of the car this squeaking then spread to the r-hand front wheel within a week, the squeaking gets slightly worse when i steer slightly to the left or right but lock to lock the noise disappears. Today i started getting a clonking noise under braking, I'll put my foot on the brakes and gradually increase the pressure to come to a smooth stop and without warning a sudden clonk will come from the front l-handside wheel. initially it was pretty intermittent but now every time i brake i get the clonk, it only happens once every time i press the pedal almost like a pressure release of some sort or a slipping of the brake pads or disk, not sure?! was just wondering if anyone else had experienced this problem or whether anyone has any suggestions as to what it could be to save taking it down the garage for diagnosing! Thanks People. Rob

If wheel bolts are ok it could be that your brake pads maybe having some play due to worn pad retaining clips..happened to me with my FTO..

Roberto,

your brakes are very unlikely to clonk unless something is catching, but if that was the case you would have your breaking affected.

Squeaking is like an alarm for you to check out your brakes and in particular your pads. If you are out of pad material and using metal to metal contact to slow down, it will squeal and the pads are long overdue a change. If you have got to that point, then probably your discs would also be shagged!

The clonking could be a CV joint anywhere in the drive train, there is one of those on each hub assembly and at least another 2 in the drive shafts. I would check these for a busted boot and grease escaping, it will be clearly evident if one of those is at fault.

Good luck.
