Good evening.

My mum alerted me to her Panda this evening that it had started to overheat, I went out and took a look at the car, I started the car and left it to idle and the temperature creeps up very quickly, however there is no heat from the vents, the rad and pipework are cold, however the engine is HOT and I mean hot.

All of the above to me would suggest the waterpump has failed. The car is a 2004, 1.1 panda active with around 77k on the clock.

Thanks.

The pumps usually squeal a bit before they eventually fail but it could be seized I guess. It could also be the thermostat, which would prevent hot waited going to the heater/radiator though you should find hot pipes from the pump in that case.

Right okay,I had similar symptoms on a Punto I owned years back which turned out to be head gasket failure, that car was an absolute pile though.

I'm going with her today to have it checked over properly. I don't really wanna start ripping bits off it.

Hope its not too serious when you take it in.

From looking at the water pump when changing mine recently, surely if it seized or stopped working to flow coolant, it would take the cam belt with it, unless the shaft between impeller and sprocket failed . Unless im missing something obvious.

On the way to the bulk head there's a bleed screw for coolant, have you seen if anything comes out? isn't it more common that the water pump spits out coolant when failing leaving no coolant.

Hi,
check the coolant is between the 2 marks, on side of radiator
a Torch is good for this - light up the "tube" and view from opposite side,

had 2 HG's fail on my 1.1,
1st through age.. 2nd through a failed heater matrix..,
worth checking the LH front passenger footwell for dampness,
