Hi im in the process of purchasing a y reg fiat punto 1.8 hgt
just wondering if anyone can give me any tips to look out for when viewing its just had new mot and has done 70000 miles any tips appreciated

Welcome! (y)

Have a good look underneath (and underneath the carpets) -- Mk2 Puntos are starting to rust on the floorpans, and in the rear wheelarches (and anywhere else you can think of), if they haven't been properly (and repeatedly) undersealed and looked after. :(

Biggest thing on HGTs, though, is the date and mileage of the last timing belt change -- and make sure that the water pump and variator were changed at the same time. Otherwise, walk away.

Otherwise (again): all the usual things -- colour of essential fluids; condition of engine bay; any ripples in the inner wings; does it drive straight and true, and get up to halfway on the temperature gauge quickly (and then stay there); does the fan come on when it should; do the warning lights all light up, and then go out (a common trick is to remove, or tape over, these...); what are the brakes like, etc.?

HGTs are getting rarer -- and, although I don't want to put you off, a lot of them have been thrashed. Mk2 Puntos, also -- like many other cars, it has to be said -- aren't always well looked after; and are -- unless well-loved -- often getting to the end of their economical lives. If you're capable of looking after the oily bits, then they can be cheap(ish) to maintain: although an HGT is a bit like a beautiful woman (sorry) and needs a bit more care....

PS: Have a look at this thread, too.... (y)

Thanks for your reply I know its just had a new mot put on a few days ago
am waiting to hear bk about the cam belt as I think it should be either due or should of been done now by 70,000 miles
ive asked my local garage for a price to do it but wasent aware about water pump or variant needs to be done too
person asking me 600 pounds for vechicle now if its possibly not had any cam belt and water pump done it may be a expensive car
what do people think
thanks for your help

Before buying a HGT.

id look into the price of

*Road/Tax.
*Insurance.

there is not many of these old HGT's left now. but they still isnt worth much.
it wouid have to be a near mint one before id' think about owning one,

ibought one a few months back with a long mot on it the car was rotten (mot's mean nothing!)
so ibroke it up, they can look mint on top but id look underneath and have alook up at the inside of the rear arches. (they rust inside out)

the 1.2 16v or 14.16v is abetter buy imho,

 blooming 'ell did you get you angry and punched it and you went right through the panel? :D id hate to see my old punto stripped out and see how much rust there is

nah,. just a gentle tap and it just fell apart,
around near the seat belt (rear) bolts was the worst.

it wouid of just all crumbled up in a crash, they is rot box, :(

to be fair i did a bodge repair on mine that got through the MOT :D bet its still there, a hole through the passenger floor pan, patched it using half of tub of p.u. adhesive  could say yeah thats a bad repair but i dont care :D she kept rusting every year so i threw in the towel :(

was going to say what a waste, i remember the days you started out on your yellow punto, i think it had starting problems didnt it or was that someone else?:D

yes it had starting problems when ifirst got it,

engine was seized, (alternator killed it..along with an headgasket that was fitted by a mechanic (upside down,)

thats it :p i bet that mechanic was either stoned or drunk if he fitted the hg upside down :D or was just plain stupid  cause the hg's on the 8v's and 16v's are straight forward to fit...this is why you shouldnt trust a fast fitter doing that sort of stuff

that said, im a qualified mechanic myself and made a few errors :bang:

The cam belt change interval was reduced to 36.000 miles.

It's DIYable (with the right timing tools). Variator issues are (very) seldom fatal.

Nice engine, but never a great one like the Lampredi one (or the old Alfa 8v engine).

You may well find an Alfa for less money.

As with all old, cheap, cars, can become very expensive very quickly unless you do most of the work yourself.
