Hello

I am new to the forum and looking for advice on my Fiat Ducato 2.8JTD motorhome gearbox. I have been travelling since September and covered 18000 miles and the van has been excellent. In Austria today I tried to change from 1st to 2nd gear, I did manage but not without a gear crunching noise. I can change from 3rd down to 2nd no problem. Do the gearboxes have problems with their synchromesh ? The van is a 2004 model.

I was looking to sell the van in a few months but hoping not to spend much on it.

Changing from 1st to 2nd is quite demanding for the sync rings because of the high gear ratio, especially if the clutch plate is not completely released.
Try shifting gear a bit slower, so the input shaft has time to drop rpm and the sync ring doesn't have to work hard. In hilly Austria that is sometimes easier said than done!

Seems a bit unusual if it's only happening between 1st. and 2nd.and not the others, although that first gearchange, as has been said, is always more demanding for the gearbox. Have you tried double declutching as that always makes the change easier between those first two gears? Cheers MICK

I agree with the double declutching, it will help but if the problem has just started after 18000 trouble free miles then something else may be going on.

If it was the clutch then I would expect it to happen in other gears as well. It could be that you are changing to fast if you have changed your habit.

If you know a trusted mechanic get them to test drive it.

I always double clutch as it gives a quicker cleaner change....

I have now taken gearbox out and stripped it down. The baulk ring for the second gear is damaged. I phoned Fiat today and they said I have to take what is called Kit B. This is £180 for the whole kit which I don't really need. My question is does anyone know if I can buy solely a baulk ring for this gear? Are there baulk ring specialists, like you have bearing specialists.

My van is a fiat ducato 2.8jtd, 2004 motorhome.

I also recently purchased the special tool to remove the clutch fork pin. This is a special puller for the job. If anyone is interested I will be selling it on.

Cheers

I did try drilling it but it was still very tight and didn't want to risk breaking the casing. Did you block up the hole with something?
