hi everyone
Hope you can help because 2 mechanics can't!! My problem started 2 days ago,up until then it was starting up and running perfect.then I went to fuel up and it wouldn't start, the only way it can start is spraying engine start into the air filter once started it runs sweet until you turn ignition off then back to square one.ive had the usual obvious checks (fuel filter etc) all clear and fine...I'm stumped and hope someone can help.

Yes your doing it right, sometimes takes a couple of days before replies start rolling in.

Does it start from cold O.K or do you always have to use easy start spray?
Any smoke?

Any work done on the engine recently?

Easy start in a diesel can cause enormous explosive pressure and bend conrods crush bearings damage wrist pins etc don't do it. Did they put diagnostics on it when hot. What year and engine do you have.

Hi
It's a 2001 ducato maxi 2.8 it's going onto a diagnostic on tue.i know it's not great to spray it to start it but being self employed if I don't have a van I don't work.does the problem sound familiar to you?

I put it down to fuel pressure rail sensor or egu sensor not 100% as I'm no machanic.

There could be a number of things that it could be...its really not worth trying to second guess,
Get the diag done first.
Low fuel pressure when cranking can certainly give your symptoms,
Engine get addicted to easy start...and often once you start using it, you will always have to.

On that engine there is a 2 common faults. you may have an injector leaking of to much fuel or a split seal on the fuel pressure regulator. Checking them is easy enough. Give me a shout if you get stuck.

Ok I've had the van on the diag and they have said its the high pressure fuel pump..is there a cheaper option than buying new as they are 500 + if anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

Thank you for that info it's been checked for leaks but nothing found.

Its not a leak in terms of diesel spillling out the injectors 'leaks'/returns too much fuel to the return line its a symptom of internal wear / damage.
The injection quantity is measured in milligrams its doesn't take much to significantly lower the pressure in the rail causing difficulty in starting. If the injectors aren't the problem you need to look at how the duty cycle of the pump regulator corresponds to reported pressure.

Ok I think I get what you mean,I will ask them when I pick it up.thankyou.the fuel rail pressure is ok it's the high pressure pump there saying is the fault.

If rail pressure is ok I'd looking at the crank sensor signal on a scope, or try some freezer spray on it.

Hi any luck sorting problem ,my van will start ok from cold but not keen at all when warm plus I have an injector light flash on and off cheers mark
