The first generation of Ducato had the 1929 unit in the lighter chassis from the start, however the heavier vans that I encountered had a Citroen M series ohv unit of the type fitted to the CX, it all depends on the weight of the vehicle used for the camper conversion - the larger coachbuilts often had the 2.5 ohv diesel also found in the Talbot Express.
Nasty thing that engine.....especially turbocharged.

mines a 2.5 atmo..Diesel.. 1988 build..,

all badged FIAT..are you saying it's origins aren't Italian,?
or are there several options..??

The SOFIM / Iveco unit is a SOHC job, however there was a pushrod ohv 2.5 fitted, this unit leans forward at about 20 degrees, has a cast alloy rocker box and a huge round (approx 2" diam) push in oil filler cap in the middle. Most of these boat anchors had no badging but some plastic bits were Fiat...have a look in your local motor factors parts book for further entertainment ! Usually, the giveaway will be chevrons cast in the block.
Incidentally, the capacity of the Citroen unit is precisely 2500cc, the SOFIM lump will be 2445cc.
Confused.....I was.

Hi y'all.
Guess what. I have the same problem.
The 8144.67 sofim heap of crud which blew up on me last week. not sure what has gone but a load of steam out of the exhaust, water in the sump and a now seized motor.
I know for sure it will need a strip and rebuild and a bucket of money.....but is it worth it?
Having done a fair bit of research it seems that only this motor will fit, flywheel sizes, different bell housings, no ecu or different at any rate.
So have you guys found anything that will fit.....there must be a few of these out there, this is a 91 hymer 544 on a ducato chassis,
I don't mind to buy a donor van and change the gearbox etc, but will only try this if someone has successfully done it before.
Any pointers greatly received

cheers

Pete
