Hello there the problem I've got is if I can rev over 3 thousand revs eng man light comes on with message take to garage, I've got a loss in power in lower gears as well but after driving for a while light goes out still loss in power, if anyone knows problem I would be chuffed thx

This happened to me on a 52 JTD, turned out to be the MAP.
It's on the back of the inlet manifold to the left (looking from the front) of the EGR.

I'll go with momoe on this one. Check the MAP sensor. Also, check the condition of the small vacuum hose (it's red on most Multiplas, about 4 or 5mm diameter) that runs across the front of the engine. Look carefully for holes in it and also that it's firmly pushed into the short lengths of rubber tube at the end of it. Check that those bits of rubber tube haven't perished as well.

It is the egr valve, try going for a real good thrashing, I mean really cane it, if it doesnt clear up then it's it the egr. If its a it'd it's at the back right I think. It isn't the crank sensor because that would mean non starter. It could be many things including maf sensor but in my experience it's the egr.

EGR valve jammed open causes the engine to run like a dog throughout the range, it's also a bugger to start and smokes badly.
Also EGR valve not closing on command generates an error code, this isn't dependent on revs.
Error code might help, but IIRC it's something cryptic like air flow/mass outside parameters.

You may need a MAP sensor, however either a code reader or the Fiat ECUscan program and a lead to connect it to a laptop is also a good idea.
Having the ability to read the code and concentrate on the issue rather than try to eliminate all other possibilities is a godsend.
It's a Multipla so it probably won't gather dust!

Ok sorry about time I've taken to reply turbo actuator stuck solid with a lot of messing about got it plunging again and drowned in wd40, going like a new car now. Thanks everyone for their good advice

Recently pulled a caravan and ecu warning came on and wouldn't go off. Took it to a garage who plugged it in with no codes coming up. So after some looking around and trying to get egr valve off noticed a pipe off at the front of the engine. Reattached the hose and jubilee clipped it instead of the tie wrap it had on the car is running sweet and very happy now I've spent a fortune on my ugly bug but I love it to bits

Hi Guys.

I have similar problems on my 105. Stated off as a loss of power at constant throttle opening, but if I changed down a gear, or revved it hard it cleared. Gradually got worse, but doesn't happen all the time. Engine management light sometimes comes on then goes off again (or not). Now it sometimes revs up on it's own when I change gear, but always ticks over OK, starts straight away and no smoke. I took it to a (non-Fiat) garage who cleared the 11 fault codes and said it needed a diesel specialist to decide what is wrong. The specialist wants £65 just to plug it in, and it might be more to diagnose the fault, which doesn't inspire confidence in them.

I will check the hoses and plugs tomorrow.

Thanks for any help or advice.

OK, so I removed the engine cover and looked for the red pipe with rubber end-connectors but couldn't see anything that fitted the description. I checked all the electrical plugs and wiring that I could get to, then un-plugged the MAF sensor and went for a little drive. No change, so I have ordered a MAF and a MAP sensor off eBay (£30 the pair including postage), and will fit them and see what happens. If no result there I will replace the crank sensor before admitting defeat and taking it to the diesel specialist.

Did you clean the 'new' MAF? I assume from what you said, that it's a s/h one? Your description of power tailing off at constant throttle sounds like classic MAF fault.

Sorry for the delay in replying. Yes, I did clean the MAF with carb cleaner. I eventually got the fault diagnosed as the throttle position sensor (TPS), which is a potentiometer attached to the throttle pedal. I bought a replacement then realised that it was going to be a sod to fit, as the whole pedal block has to come out, apparently. However, someone suggested I unplugged the white multiplug (under dash in passenger footwell) and plug it back in again, and hey presto, no more problems. Must be like rebooting a computer. No idea why it works, but it does.

I wish someone had told me that four months ago!
