Hi All,

I am in the Bristol area and have a stilo abarth (52) selespeed gearbox and have problems that it needs attention.

I think the actuator and pump has gone (local garage told me that) but I'm not sure.

Any specialists around or do I need Fiat to look at it, was quoted £2600 and told that might not fix the problem and probably not worth it.

Any help advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Owen

Can you hear it priming with ignition on engine off?
Can you change manually through he gears with engine off?
Hi,

When the engine is running and I try and put it in gear, it makes a violent jump, sometimes it will make the gear selection but generally not.

The car is in immaculate condition so would love to get it repaired, just knowing where and what the problem is.

Thanks for replying by the way and do you have any more thoughts.

helps if we know where you are buddy... somebody may have FES close to you and help you with diag/rectification

usually pump issues dont let you select gears it shuts down the box, im by no stretch of the imagination any good with selespeed but from oh what litle i do know about it, it sounds like a clutch calibration issue theres LOADS of info on the alfa selespeed which afaik is the same box as in the fiats... google maybe your friend ;)

A violent jump sounds like a clutch problem to me - as in, a mechanical clutch problem (worn out/release bearing collapsed) - sounds like the system thinks the clutch is disengaged when it's not. I wouldn't be too quick to condemn the actuator, though some pressure readings with FIATEcuScan (which you can download) would certainly be a good start to diagnosing the pump and accumulator.

"£2600 that might not fix the problem and probably not worth it" - run a mile! They should be able to work out a much better plan than that before starting work.

If it is the clutch, then I reckon that has to be considered routine maintenance if it's over 100,000km (60,000 miles). What I mean is that it's a similar job to what would be needed if you had a regular manual transmission.

OK. Try operating it manually with the engine off, Ign on and report back.

Hi All,

Thanks for responses and sorry for late reply.

So I can here it priming with ignition on although does sound crackly. It will move through the gears in manual mode but wont select reverse (this is all with engine off ignition on).

I am based in Bristol in the UK, so anyone out there that could send me in the right direction as I love this car and am not ready to give up on it like some of the garages that I have contacted.

Any further thoughts or help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Owen

Try the guys over at Brislington MOT Centre up by Bris driving test centre. They've done all the work on my Stilo for me. Doesn't charge the earth and very honest.

Mind I do give him alot of discounts on car parts and in return he gives me discounts on the work.

Check earth connections and plugs first or see Auto electrician. Previous owner of my car had had work done on pump at some expense only to find it was a minor electrical fault.
When I got the car the battery earth clamp would not tighten up so was a cheap fix fitting a new one. The computer cable and FIATecuscan software was a good investment to trace faults.

How did you get on with this?
Apparently low pressure will do this which could be the bushes gone in the pump, a drop in voltage to the pump, a perished pipe from the reservoir to the box or ecu problems.
