Mk2 Punto - Intermittent Starting Problem

I've just purchased a Mk2 Punto 2002 for my Son (first Car etc.) and new to the Fiat Forum. It appears to have an intermittent starting problem that can strike at any time (usually the most inconvenient time). The starter will fly over but nothing. Try it a few more times and it will start or leave it a while and it will start? I believe the the fuel pump is working fine as I can hear it turn on from inside the car. Observation - Whilst the starter is turning I can hear a relay clicking (in the fuse box to the right of the steering wheel). I expect poor starting can be for a number of reasons but as this is intermittent I wondered if anyone had some previous experience or ideas?
