ABS and EBD system error??

I have Multipla from 2001- 1.6 petrol version. When I start engine (ABS) and (!) lamp came on and message "ABS system error", "EBD system error" and "Contact garage" appears on the board computer along with beep sound. After approx. 1-2 seconds lights go out and car works fine. That happens in about 30% of cases when I start the engine. The warning ABS end EBD lights have never came ON while I was driving. I asked my mechanic about that and he said that it should not be problem if (ABS) and (!) lamps are not ON when I drive. However, I am not sure about his opinion.
If any one has some advice, thoughts or similar experience I will appreciate some comment.
Thank you

Er! our first JTD had a habit of flagging up `low engine oil`, after repeatly checking same, we `lived` with it! This could be a similar `clitch`. But Fiat did do a mod to the ECU (upgrade no details) when they did the front springs recall. A diagnostic SHOULD show up any probs with your ABS, if you`re worried. yours Ruggero.

Re: ABS and EBD system error??

i had this problem with my multipla and after loads of messing about it was found that if the battery wasn't running 100% it gave this fault, quite a common problem apparently. I had a new battery and it's been fine ever since. Hope this helps

Funny you should say that as I get these error messages if I've been listening to the radio for a few minutes before starting the engine.

Upon start up (especially diesels) battery voltage drops a large amount, unless your battery is in very good condition you will get errors (ABS/oil pressure etc) as you say & is also as you say very common.End of day multiplas have proved to be very reliable with very few faults

Re: ABS and EBD system error??

Hi My first post, having just joined the forum. So thanks to everyone for all the information and advice offered on the site. A great source of help. I have a 1.3 Multijet diesel 16v 2006 model. I have just serviced the car, oil, oil filter air filter etc.. and have also checked the glow plugs one having failed.
I finished the work and started up the car to check oil levels and no leaks when I did so the engine warning light came on showing abs and ebd failure. I turned the engine looked to the handbook to see what the warning letters meant. This took abpout 20 mins I then went back to the car started it up again and now no waring lights, all is as it was before the service. The car and engine run fine just as before. I hope this is of some use, comfort and or help. If anything else developes I will post it. Many thanks again to all those on the forum. mvfjps

ABS and EBD system error??

I've been getting the ABS light and warning pretty much every time I drive my 02 115 JTD in the last couple of weeks.
Comes on usually about 5-10 minutes after starting.
In the last week as well, it's been struggling to turn over properly at start-up.
It always starts, but just sounds like it's not going to.

I wouldn't have made the connection between the two problems, so thanks to those who pointed it out.

I just picked up a new Battery from Halfords, the old one checked out OK according to their test-meter, but it's only a 380Amp model, when it should be a 640.

I'll let you know how it goes...

Re: ABS and EBD system error??

Hi

I have had this error with my car, just a week or so before my alternator packed up. It would periodically come up with the warning on start up, and would then go off and the car would be fine. I had the battery checked, which was fine, but the alternator wasn't giving a full 14v to the battery, and was not charging at all when the fault light was on.

Once the alternator was replaced, it was back to the 14v + that it should have been giving. This was replaced for 80 by a local garage, who charged at prior agreement, based on what their book said. The poor buggers, 2 of them were at all day, and still only charged me 80. Happy days!

I would check your battery terminal to see what output that you are getting from your alternator to see if this could be the fault.

Cheers

James

ABS and EBD system error??

New battery cured the starting issue, but the warnings were still coming thick and fast (ABS, Humidity Dies(el) Filter, oil sensor and level).
Then, Thurs evening, I went through a small pond (would be wrong to call it just a puddle), and got the 'Alternator Faulty' message and battery light.
It went off for a while, then came back and refused to go.
No charge at the battery.

To be honest, I've been expecting it to go for a long time, as the body has had a huge crack in it for ages.
This was in June 2010...

The crack's grown a fair bit since then, so nearly two and a half years and approx 70,000miles out of it is pretty good I reckon.

ABS and EBD system error??

The original crack (the one in the body itself) was most likely caused by corrosion starting in that hole.
The two fresh-looking cracks in the webs I think were caused when my Daughter stalled it so violently (while learning to drive), that the Aux belt snapped (it was already on it's way out).

Reading up on Alternators on here earlier, I'm pretty sure the pulley is loose as well, and probably the crankshaft one also.
Hopefully it'll stop raining for long enough later today, so I can get underneath and whip it all out/off...

ABS and EBD system error??

Nice and sunny for most of today, so I got busy and whipped the Alternator off.
Whipped probably isn't the correct word to be honest, as it took long enough!

I undid all the engine mounts (left and right at the front, and the centre rear, plus the r/h steady next to the Diesel filter.
I also removed the front exhaust section, and unbolted the subframe from the chassis, and dropped the whole assembly down a few inches, which helped with access to the Alternator bolts.
Pulling the engine forwards allowed the Alternator do drop out fairly easily, once unbolted.

Honestly, if I ever got to meet a modern car designer, I wouldn't get tired of punching them!

ABS and EBD system error??

Just picked up the replacement Alternator, they wouldn't take the old one in exchange, because of the cracks in the housing...
Bo***cks!
