Towing

[?]Hello campers! I am a Ford clone about to slough off my Mondeo and attain the seventh level of Happiness via thr purchase of.... Yes!......a Multipla! Only one thing, my trailer tent weighs in at 600 Kilograms.... Does anyone out there have experience (RATHER THAN AN OPINION) about the possiblity of towing the brute with a 1.6 SX/ELX? I should also add we are a family of 5, all tall, so the car is going to be carrying a goodly load without the trailer. Replies and fresh supplies of dots to my e-mail above.

S.S.

Not a 100 percent sure about the petrol multipla but the diesel is highly rated by the caravan magazines - with one of these you wouldn't know you had anything on the back!

I have driven a petrol multi and they are quite responsive - not as good at the turbo diesel IMO but certainly quite lively. What engine is in the mondeo?

Forgot to add, try posting on the forum on http://www.multiplaowners.co.uk/ as it gets more multipla traffic than here it seems!

Cheers Frog! That sets my mind at rest no end. If the glossy boys like to play with it, then us plebs should have nae probs! Wot size Mondeo? 1.8LX with the Zetec injection engine. It can still (after 72000 miles) wreck a set of tyres on a dry road if you use a heavy shoe... so you see, having had so little trouble pulling my tent, I didn't really want to be reconciled to the crawler lane.

Much obliged for the quick reply. S.S. :)

Talked about a lot this...every spring!
I tow with a 1.9 jtd elx 2001 110 bhp vintage multi a folding camper all up weight of 900kgs. MPG is about 38 and we are all tall.My eldest son 6'3" me, 6' 1" and 171/2 stone.
Wife average littlest son tall but skinny. However, we also have a towbar mounted bike rack with three mountain bikes on so ...only worry is petrol then!
Petrol Multis tow well but tend to have to rev engine more than the diesels and donot produce such good mpg's. Seen them towing Caravans so its not a big problem Your 600 kgs is not alot!
Multis are wide tracked wwith a short rear overhang so donot generally have any handling problems when towing.
At this years UBB there were about a dozen of us all towing various kits...UBB? Ugly Bug Ball!!
