My multipla jtd has develpd a new fault. This morning it felt sluggish and the turbo seemed t be kicking in only above 2500RPM. On the way home it stopped boosting and instead made a noise like someone rifling a deck of cards at about 2500 rpm when the eturbo had been kicking in.

Could it be the bypass valve or am I way off track? There is no smoke from the exhaust and no faults registered in ECU. I cleaned the EGR valve very recently. I have had a look at the tubes from intercoole to turbo + the one above that comes from the air filter housing and could not see any leaks.

Any help would be appreciated. I have a donor car for spares but need to know what to replace and if possible how.

Thanks i advance.

Just had a go with ecu scan- desired air intake is much greater than actual intake. Black smoke comes out under hard revs on the drive. Desired boost is higher than actual boost under acceleration (not that there was much of this). (n)

Is my turbo on the way out? Or is thee perhaps a blockage in the CAT? Also, it says the oil level is too high. It wasn't earlier...

Sounds like a split or loose turbo pipe/duct to me. Check the 'wobbly' rubber one low down at the front of the car, just behind the radiator. It's normally covered in oil and in a minging state.

See if you can squash (even partially, with your hand) any of the rubber ducting from the turbo to the intercooler/intercooler to the inlet manifold while someone holds the revs in boost range (i.e. 2,000rpm+). If you can, then the turbo isn't boosting properly.

if you don't find problem with induction piping or intercooler.

as you look under bonnet the air filter is on the right
there is an air filter support plate under the air filter.
on the left of this there is a bracket which holds what I think is the boost control solenoid valve.

connected to this valve are two thin, pencil diameter flexible pipes, one is connected to turbo the other heads upward .

Check one to turbo connected both ends .

check the other connected to controller. follow it from controller and make sure it is not damaged and connected to wherever it goes.

check any other hoses of similar diameter that you find along the way make sure they are connected to something.

some hoses run past but very close to the egr valve , possibly inside heat insulated material, to somewhere between rear of engine and bulk head.

It is possible one or more may have been dislodged inadvertently.

Good luck .

Air filter collapsed ? blocked? sucked in a rag from egr clean?
fresh air pipe across top of rad blocked.
squirrels stuffed your box with nuts? no that's not a joke

egr stuck open or fluttering, pack of cards sound maybe.

out of all those suggested checks , sorry, work through starting with the easiest even if sound silly.

just read that you have a donor car, now that's handy, you so and so.

Panic over! I replaced the MAF sensor and suddenly the problem was solved. The plastic tube the sensor sits in was not firmly connected to the air intake pipe (was being held on by a cable tie but had slipped off). This was probably the cause of the noise as it vibrated against the air intake box.

Thanks. I will try not to panic next time my multipla does something strange.

yey you have fixed it again, careful it is addictive!

thanks for posting your results.
