Hi All,

It's been a long time since I've frequented this forum as our Multipla has been running like a dream. We've only had to deal with a top strut mount issue and the usual drop links in nearly three years.

However, in the last two weeks the car has begun to sound like an outboard motor. Does anyone have any ideas?

Yesterday, I took the liberty of a visual inspection of the exhaust from front to back while it was having an oil change yesterday and there were no obvious huge holes. But I cannot be sure if there's a small hole somewhere along it.

I used Torque Pro to take a look to see if there were any fault codes, and sure enough there was nothing.

Can I assume there's no issue with the bottom end if there's no fault codes?

The mechanic took it for a spin around the block while he was waiting for an opportunity to drive into one of their engineering bays at the garage, and I noticed a huge plume of black smoke from the exhaust.

He recommended a bottle of Cataclean on a quarter tank of fuel and a good run, since the car only does 3 - 4mile runs in very much stop-start traffic four days a week and seldom does a motorway run nor does it get a small blast on an A-road at 50mph for more than 10seconds.

I thought it could be an internally corroded muffler, due to the regular short journeys leading to water build up and internal corrosion where the water wasn't burned off or pushed out of the exhaust..

I took it to Kwik fit this morning who told me they didn't know how to troubleshoot whether an exhaust muffler was no good, so I knocked it a few times with a rubber mallet but I couldn't hear any loose bits rattling.

I've sent the wife on a trip with the kids to a kids themed farm so that the Cataclean can get a chance to do its job should get a good motorway run for 15minutes each way.

I had a very noisy exhaust just after replacing the middle and rear sections. I thought the worst, new downpipe needed, but it turned out to be very simply sorted. I had driven through standing water and the force of the spray had knocked the soft aluminium heat-shield onto the pipe/box causing it to resonate. Pulled the shield free and cured the noise.
