Our Multipla won't go in gear. It broke down and the AA recoved the car. They said clutch but as I wasn't there I don't know if it's the plates or the hydraulic mechanism ?? When it was stuck in first the pedal had no affect but the car was moving forward. It had been hard to get in gear on a few ocations the previous day. I don't want to put £400 worth of clutch plates in it if it may be something else??
Any help would be great! Thanks

Right thanks! I haven't got the keys for the car as its my wife's daughters car! She hasn't given me the keys yet! It's a 2001 diesel manual !
Thanks again

Got to have a look today and the car goes through the gears fine with the engine off! When it's running once the clutch is pressed it makes a strange noice and the car won't go into gear? Thanks again

with the clutch pressed it makes a strange sound? is it a rough bearing sound, it probably the release bearing if it is. when off the clutch pedal the noise goes away?

had one go on an old car, it wasn't too long after the clutch had been changed, it pointed to the mechanic not lubricating the clutch arm after replacement thus always riding the clutch and wearing the release/thrust bearing.

took the gearbox off myself and replaced the bearing for £5. no garage would've replaced the bearing on its own, they would've insisted the whole clutch assembly be replaced.
