Good evening all,

Having read some really useful threads concerning heavy clutches and low biting points, which mine has, I reckon now is the time for me to try and lubricate my JTD Multi's clutch lever.

Can anyone advise me of the best way to gain access to the lever and has anyone got a pic of it so I know what I'm aiming for ?

Many thanks, Malc :)

Can of WD40 and just go to town just under the lever exactly where it goes down into the bell housing. Go all the way round as far as you can and it helps to have someone actuating the clutch to get the lube into the nylon bearings.

Thanks GP. Do you get to it from above/under bonnet or from the side after taking the N/S wheel off ?

Oh dear, if you don't know where the lever is we are in trouble :) You will need to remove the air filter housing. I will take a picture in the morning showing the lever as my car is already in state of dissaembly.

Many thanks. To be fair the only trouble I'll have is finding the time to do it, as I have 2 small children and work all hours but have about 2 hours "free" tomorrow morning and just wanted to know whether it was a wheels off job or poke head under bonnet affair :)

2 Hours is more than enough but you need to do this from the top and so you need to remove the air filtering housing so as to get access to the clutch lever. You would need to be a circus contortionist to do it successfully from underneath. It may be possible from the N/S wheel arch with the wheel removed but I would not recommend this route. To get the air filter housing off you need to remove the two screws holding on the air scoop that runs on top of the radiator. Once off the air filter housing is held in with a single screw on the right hand side with you standing in front of the car. Once off remove the electrical connection going to the MAF at the top of the housing and then it will just life out. You will then have sufficient access to the lever with the WD40/extension tube.

My Gearbox has just been out so my area is much clearer of obstacles but this shows you where the clutch lever is.

I use wd40 and a straw, that way I can do it from above in the engine bay, onlt takes about 5 minutes. There is a thread knocking about on this site somewhere, with details and pictures.

Hi Jim,

Is that without removing the airbox ? I've tried searching for the thread you've mentioned but haven't found it as of yet.

You cannot get to it without removing the Airbox, I have already provided you the options. When I mentioned WD40 I implicitly meant with the straw as they always come with one for good reason. You will also need to slightly push the turbo pipe to the right to get access to the clutch for bearing.

Here is the link, it is from another site, scroll down to gearbox and clutch section, then scroll down to making your clutch easier to press (all one word). Even though they suggest to take air box out for easier access, I don't bother. I wedge the hoses apart with my finger and thumb, set straw into joint and squirt wd40 down. I can also spray it from underneath with the extension on can.

Another simple way of getting lubricant onto the clutch lever it to use a length of rubber hose similar size to heater hose. Poke it down to the lever and either pour a small amount of light oil or spray WD40 down it. You can easily see the end of the hose and direct it accordingly. I used the wife to administer the medicine whilst I directed the hose, it worked a treat - simples!
