Howdy,
My multi has been trouble free for what seems like years...till today

2003 JTD 160000miles.... going REALLY good.

Just driving along today and it cut out..."Engine control management" or something similar came up oin the dash...contact garage...

Anyhow being a multi owner needless to say i dint contact the garage...i reached for the vice grips.

Anyhow...now way would it start...i disconnected battery for about ten mins...reconnected...still no joy.

Did it again and after a while (cranking 30 seconds at a time)...it popped into life and drove off smoothly as if nothing had happenned.

Ill hook it up to fiatecuscan when i get home, but im thinking its likely cam or crank sensor.

Has anyone here who has had cam or crank sensor faults had the same "ECU fault" message pop up on their screen??

It would be peace of mind if i knew this was the case.
Cheers,
Marty.

If it starts OK from cold but refuses once warmed up - crank sensor is the first thing to change. About £30 last time I looked.

Good to hear it's been going well (y)

Hooked up multiecuscan tonight and confirmed ... No signal from crank sensor error or something along those lines.... Yeah it's been going great...160k miles on it and really flying along...smooth as anything.
Cheers
Marty.

Update...ordered crank sensor from ebay 13 pound!! (Came yesterday)Car has been cutting out regularly since first instance and yesterday died totally half mile from home.. Tried starting it several times yesterday eve and again this morn..no joy.
So replaced sensor on the side of the road(uneasy feeling under a car on axel stands with trucks whizzing by...)... Anyway about an hour of fiddling and poking and I was done...jumped into life first turn of the key :).

Anyway this thread was invaluable.

It's impossible disconnect the old sensor without removing that plastic bracket...so was a great help.
Cheers all happy motoring.
Marty.

I've had my 06 JTD 95k for about one month, and it has run fine so far, until today. Am down in Devon visiting family and went out this morning with no issues and parked on another relatives drive, which is on a steep incline facing downward. After our visit we got back in the car and car wouldnt start. We rolled in forward onto the level and i tried again a few times, still no joy. A local resident came by and offered the help of another neighbour who had lots of tools.
After about 15 minutes we returned to the car and we tried it again and, of course, it started! (making me look a bit silly), however it did come up with the fault mentioned above 'eng mgmt fault - contact garage' and the light stayed on the journey home, although the car seemed to run ok, but was it was only about 11miles.
The only other thing i noticed was that the coil light didnt flash at start-up, it came on when the check ran, but then went out with all the other lights. It is a very hot day so that may have been why the coil light didnt come on, and i wonder if there was enough heat in the engine to cause the camshaft sensor to misbehave. When I got home I tried to restart the car immediately and it started no problem but the warning and light came on again. I have just tried again (an hour later) and again, started fine but no warning or EML this time!

As we are down with relatives we are due to go down to Cornwall tomorrow (150m round trip), is this inadvisable? We have break-down cover but can only be recovered once, if the car isnt capable of a long trip, we will wait until we are heading home (300 miles) until we risk having to play that card!

PS. Now ordering an ECU scan lead so hopefully can atleast identify it before attempting a longer journey.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice you can spare.

Oh, one more thing, an intial thought I had when it happened was that possibly the fuel wasnt getting to the engine, due to the car being on a steep forward angle. If the fuel pump is at the back of the tank I suppose this may be a possibility, although it still didnt start the first couple of tries on the level - maybe im just hoping theres nothing actually wrong!

No, it has only failed to start once, and it had been sitting for around 2 hours in todays sun 28-30ish), that was after driving there (11 miles) with a stop at a shop for 15 mins about a mile before the end, where it had started fine. It also started fine once home when I guess it would have been pretty much upto temperature.
It runs fine, am just apprehensive about taking it on a long major a-road route if it might cut out and require a wait for it to cool down befoer restarting (as ive read is a symptom of the crankshaft sensor failiure) - not fun at the best of times, but with heat like this and 2 young children it would be a nightmare.

Read my other thread called end of 8 year relationship. I have JUST had this exact same damn thing happen to me on the day I was selling the bloody car. Fortunately I had a brand new CPS in my stockpile. Today has been the hottest day. If electronics are going to fail this will be the time they will do so

Got my ELM cable this evening, managed to get it working surprisingly easily (once i read multiscan instructions!) and it confirmed RPM sensor. Have ordered a new one from EuroCarParts to collect tomorrow, plus axle stands and a socket set, because all my tools are at home, 300 miles away! I figure shelling out less than £80 on parts and tools will still be cheaper than a garage, plus I can always do with more tools!

Will update with how I get on tomorrow.

Managed to get it done in the end, pretty easy really, and access wasnt too bad. However, as with all my DIY exploits it took way longer than it should have. I spent a very long time trying to force/pry the old sensor out, so much so that I actually borke it into several pieces! I then discovered the trick is to gently wiggle and twist it out! Would have saved myself at least an hour, shoulder pain and frustration had i realised! My sensor was just the sensor, no lead, presumably its a slight variation from whats shown in the guide posted above. After that I cleared the code on the laptop and have given it a short test drive, there were no dash lights, i cleared the codes yesterday and then tried to start it but it refused (almost like id reminded it that it was broken!). Long test drive tomorrow - 75 miles each way!
Thanks to the original poster for that link and for saying they managed to get it done in an hour - gave me the confidence to know if i set aside the whole day I should deffo get it done!
