Hi,

I'm ordering a cam belt kit for my 2003 JTD. The Service book that came with the car advises every 5 years to change the timing belt, but I cannot see anything about the frequency of the auxiliary belt. What should it be?

Many thanks!

Rich

As a broken belt can get caught in the timing belt and damge it, I always fit a new aux belt when the timing belt is changed. Low cost and peace of mind.

Last time I looked, the Cam/Timing Belt was completely enclosed by the Plastic covers, so nothing of any size could get in there. (y)

Aux Belt is an 'on-condition' item really, it'll start to make squeaking/whining noises when it's on the way out, and will start to show signs of cracking on the ridges, most noticeable where it goes round the Tensioner Pulley (small diameter, Belt ridges on outside, so stretched, which will show up age cracking).

Might as well do it while you're doing the Cam Belt really, especially as you don't know how long it's been on there.

Hi,
The top pulleys and main run of the timing belt is enclosed, but both belts run on crankshaft pulleys so it's hard to separate them at the bottom end. It's a very low probability of a broken aux belt affecting the timing belt, but it's a classic probability / consequence / cost balance. The probability of it happening is very low, but the conseqence is high (possible major engine damage or an accident due to loss of power) and cost of avoiding it is low. This makes it worth doing.

does the crankshaft pulley themselves cause problems on the jtd, on some models (hdi) these tend to need changing circa 70k because of damping on pulley giving in.

once had an aux belt shredding and wrapping itself round the crankshaft pulley making the timing jump breaking valves damaging the head.

Had to change the torsion damper pulley on my old Marea (1.9JTD 110hp) but so far the one on the current Croma (1.9 mJTD 150hp ) is OK. The pulley makes a nasty rattling noise at idle when the damping fails.
