Technical Gates timing belt

Technical Gates timing belt

Gates is a good brand, and are OE fitment to many manufacturers.

Issues:
The item pictured is NOT a timing belt kit. (Something lost in translation perhaps) It is an auxiliary belt kit, so is great for water pump, auxiliary belt tensioner, and it looks like the alternator pulley may be there too, which is a bonus as they can give up.

If however you want/need a timing belt kit, this is not it.

As either timing belt of auxiliary belt are quite important, I would be wary of sourcing abroad, in case of any fit or failure issues. Better to source locally, even if price is higher.

.....during my time in the motor trade (now retired) I've fitted numerous Gates belts with no problems.
I'm pretty sure "genuine" belts are not made by Fiat themselves. Many O/E parts are made by others - it's just finding out who they originate from !
This seems a good bargain for the price, and includes all the bits to do the job as it should be done (replace the lot whilst you have the thing in bits !).
Might be an idea to fit a new auxiliary belt at the same time?
Either way a new belt etc. could save £££s in expense should the old one break in service, as I,ve sadly seen so many times !!

I've had that item saved in my ebay watched items list for quite a while as it's an excellent price for such a kit. I've asked the seller to clarify what they will supply.

Cheers for all the answers guys. Widemouth would you mind letting me know what's included when they get back to you. I didn't even notice it was a German seller. Lol proves how observant I am doesn't it. I was hoping the kit includes everything not just the timing belt as I seem to have a small leak coming from my water pump so that defo needs changing. Cars on a 56 plate with 79k miles and it's never had a belt change, according to the history I've got.

I've bought other stuff from them in the past and not had a problem. Checking through their feedback history I found a couple of +ve ones from purchasers of this kit, so it looks as though it's OK.

It's Mister Autos' own brand. When I've bought Bölk stuff in the past, it's arrived with their sticker stuck over someone elses name, usually someone I've not heard of but sometimes decent kit.

If you can wait a few days I'll tell you if the Gates kit on ebay is the right one, as I'll be ordering one from them tomorrow

It does say on the picture that the photo is not representative of the actual item. Or words to that effect.
Ive just bought a contitech kit, not done one on a multipla before but done a few vectras with the same engine, pretty straight forward really.

I've also used dayco belt kits before, again very good kits and also OE fitting on a lot of Japanese cars.

Cheers for that. Yeah I can wait. I'm working on getting all the MOT fail points done first so won't have time to do a belt for a couple weeks anyway.
Cheers for the input Steve always good to hear more recommendations.

I've got the Contitech on mine at the moment. It's a really nice, quality kit & I'd like to fit the same again, but they seem to have got a lot more expensive since I last bought one.

I have just fitted a conitech to mine. I tend to change my belts every 30K but do NOT change the pulleys at each one only at every third change. Did the waterpump this time as well as it was the original 13 year old one. Was still perfect actually. Here is my tip for loosening the camshaft lock nut. Remove the upper reaction link mouting bracket from the engine, rotate it 180 degrees and then bolt it back on. Use an old spark plug socket between it and one of the webs in the camshaft gear as shown. Then with a power bar give the nut a good swift crack. See picture

How much did you pay for the Conti kit? Btw _ the German ebay seller of the Gates kit has confirmed that it is a timing kit. The part number in the description is correct; the image of the aux belt bits is not.

I didn't buy a whole kit. I got the belt from my local factors for £18 and the pulleys and water pump from separate vendors on eBay. Probably around £70 in total. That gates kit is good value.

Just a quick one guys. If I'm going to be fitting a new timing belt kit and water pump should I go ahead and change the aux belt at the same time? And if I do is there anything else i should change with it?

Cheers.

Check the condtion of the belt & make sure the tensioner pulley sits dead square to the belt - they have a tendency to sag and end up pointing downwards. Before you remove the belt, stand in front of the car, crouch down & sight down the edge of the belt furthest from the engine. You can see the 'inside' of the belt where it runs over the tensioner. If it looks 'down' on the LHS, the tensioner is shot.

Another symptom of a knackered tensioner is belt squeal at tickover.

Kit arrived this morning, all present and correct. Genuine Gates kit, boxed and sealed. Perhaps not quite as nicely finished/presented as the Conti kit, but still very fit for purpose.

The water pump is separately boxed and is Graf brand. Not one I've heard of, so will sniff around on google to see if it's notorious. However, some on here will be very pleased to hear that it has an all-brass impeller, not a plastic one. General fit and finish looks good.
