Hi, I have a 2008 multipla elenganza 1.9 jtd, last few weeks I have had a funny noise coming from the belts on the left handside as you look at the engine from the front, its like a sqealing bearing type noise when its warmed up after a few minutes, very loud, belts not slipping, but looks a right pain to change, is there 2 belts there or just one, ? I'm struggling to work it out or even what the noise is, sounds more metaly if that makes sence, any ideas or how I change the belt if it is that, the belt does look likes it has some marks on one edge of it .. any advice greatly recieived
Thanks

Water pump?!?!

 DONT drive it or run the engine until you've done this.

Take the covers off the engine and check the belts.

Check the water pump in particular, for wobbling or any sign of anything unusual.

If the water pump seizes, it will take out your timing belt and the engine..................................................................................................... so BEWARE and don't run it unless you're 100% sure the water pump isn't on the way out.

You may have to take the wheel off and the under wing cover for access, but whatever you do, it might be the difference between a relatively cheap job and a new lump, so it's worth it.

This may not be applicable to your exact car, but it will give you an idea of what you're looking for and how to get access.

I thought mine had 2 belts, one running round the ac unit etc and then behind that theres the timing belt ? or are they the same thing ?

You shouldn't need to take the engine mount off to visually check the water pump and give it a wiggle about.

Once you've got access and are *reasonably* sure that it's not the water pump, run it *BRIEFLY* with the alternator belt off. If the noise has gone, you're in luck. It's the alternator or something else.

But it really does sound like the water pump is the likely culprit to me....

You've got two belts. The inner is the timing belt - the outer is the ancileries belt - alternator, AC compressor etc... that guide just shows the timing belt, it assumes you've already take the anc. belt off ;)

Check all your bearings on both belts..

Its going into a local garage on Monday after looking I thought I cant be arsed doing that myself lol. anyway I think its just the auxiliary belt or a pully on it as when I spray a bit of wd40 on it it stops for a while, ( minutes ). is it a big job to do the timing belt aswel while there doing it, thought might aswel do both, haven't got any history when it was done last

It's always a good investment ;)

Re: Belt noise problem

Ive got the Timing belt kit with water pump and the other belt kit from a local car spares shop (BOTH GATES ) FOR £110 in total, local garage fitting them Monday for about £70 so not bad I think

That's a very good price if it's all Gates kit. Does it include the tensioner pulley for the aux belt?

Re: Belt noise problem

I would think it's the aux belt that's giving you the squeal, probably because the tensioner pulley bearing is on the way out or the bracket that it's mounted to is bent.
