Need to do belt soon...did it 60k ago and at the time bought a gates kit which had marks on it.
The next time I'd rather use locking tools to get the timing true.
Does anyone know if the cam pulleys can be loosened off on the JTD engine to facilitate this or are you limited by the resolution of the belt.
Cheers
Marty.

If it's a JTD 8 valve engine, there is only one camshaft pulley. The pulley next to it is for the high pressure fuel pump, and doesn't need timing. The camshaft pulley doesn't need to be loosened to replace the timing blt.

Thanks Davern.
Yes its the 8V and im aware the diesel pumpo doesnt need timing as its common rail.
I did the job myself about 4 years ago but my question really is..CAN the cam pulley be loosened to get a more accurate timing result?

Cheers,
Marty

Obviously it can be loosened to replace the pulley or the camshaft sensor, but it's located on the camshaft with a fixed peg. There's no verneer adjustment to vary the valve timing.

Providing the camshaft timing mark is aligned with the pointer on the cover, and the correct tool is used to lock the crankshaft at TDC, the timing should be spot on.

Thanks a lot... i couldnt rightly remember..so basically theres no adjustability by slackening a cam bolt as its on a keyed shaft or similar by the sounds of it.

I didnt use timing tools last time as the markings were good enough and the belt actually came with markings too.

Thanks again,
Marty

Correct.

Perhaps it's different on your Multipla, but on both of my Stilos (same engine), there's a mark on the toothed crankshaft pulley, but no corresponding mark on the front cover/oil pump to line it up with. The picture below is at TDC and shows the small mark on the pulley. The mark on the front cover/oil pump is just a scratch mark I put there for my reference.

I would never trust the printed white line marking found on some belts. The only way to align it accurately is with the locking tool.

There is a mark on mine alright...on crank pulley and casing...not easy to see and its at the "9 oclock" position roughly.
Also the marking on the belt helps..
Must do it...had one fail on our other car a few weeks back...mondeo...costly :(

Does the mark on your oil pump casing look original? or could it have been put there by a previous owner/garage? as I did with mine.

If your car is the 2003 115 JTD you've posted about previously, then ePER (the Fiat parts catalogue) shows the oil pump as the same part number (46744432) as both of my 2003 115 JTD engines. Therefore, they should all be exactly the same.

Picture below from my other Stilo shows the oil pump casing with no mark at the 9 o'clock position.

Yes its 2003 JTD 115...its 4 years since i did it, but i think id have noticed if it "didnt look original"...i remember seeing posts from others saying they didnt have it and others saying they did have it, so id say its an original mark alright.
When im doing it ill take a pic for here.

Not sure but can the belt tensioner move the belt a tiny amount, get the pointer in the centre of the little circle and timing will be spot on over tension would it advance slightly or under tension retard it ? Mmm
