I have a 2000 100 16V ELX, got it about 18 months ago. I have had the wheel bearings replaced on the offside, rear and front, but there's still a rumbling from the front end.
The garage who did the front wheel bearing reckon it's the nearside bearing but it sounds exactly as it did before they replaced the offside bearing.

Is it possible that the drive shaft makes the sound ? The car has done about 114,000 miles.

I've replaced the discs on the front so it is not that.

Any ideas ? I can't afford to chuck money at garages who are guessing at my expense.

As an aside, my son has a Landrover (the "Footballers Wife" model I think it's called, big V8 and chrome ) He's just paid £530 for his front bearing and he's still got the same sort of noise.

Any more detail? Does it make more noise turning left/right, on or off throttle? Any clicking noises to go with the rumble? Does it get louder the faster you go, or vary with engine revs?

hi, :)
IF you are suitably equipped you can get the front of car up on axle stands..then run up through gears.. that'll soon pinpoint noises - as there is ZERO tyre noise..,
I did this to diagnose a Marea bearing..
amazing how fast is goes from 30 to 130 when you floor it in top.!!:D

Thanks for the quick responses.

It's not engine speed related; it is there when coasting. It is louder when cornering hard, no clicking element to the noise.

perhaps I should get the tracking checked ?

I will try the axle stand approach over the weekend; aforementioned son 'borrowed' my stands a few years back 'just for the weekend'. I am visiting him so I can get him to help.

We are quite used to Italian cars, we have both had Fiats; Stradas 65 and 85, I've had a 2300 saloon back in the 70s, I've had a Tipo, and he's had a Uno and a Punto.
We've both had various Lancia Beta coupes and his wife has an Alfa. We are very used to the parts being different on each example of any particular model.

Are you sure it's coming from the wheel. Drop links and arb bushes are weak spots on multiplas.

If it sounds exactly as it did before the garage replaced the OS bearing, then it seems unlikely that the fault is on the OS, and what you're hearing is the original fault & it doesn't lay with the OS bearing. If it's road speed related & gets worse when cornering, that suggests that it IS a wheel bearing. Putting load on a knackered bearing usually makes it noisier. Does the rumbling get louder when cornering right? In order of preference, I'd suspect:

The NSF wheel bearing

The NS diff bearing

The OS diff bearing

The tripod bearings on the inner ends of the halfshafts normally 'click' when they start to go TU, so I wouldn't think it's one of them.

But possible.

I had the OS front wheel bearing changed, then had the same symptoms shortly afterwards. The garage replaced it again, under their warranty, and said it was unusual but the first bearing they fitted was faulty.
(I have my suspicions about whether they fitted it properly, because there were signs that they had had a battle getting it on or off.)
It's been alright since, so that was the problem.

Have just noticed that the noise has gone, a recent replacement of the wishbone/balljoint seems to have done the job. The balljoint had a lot of wear, the tyre was getting worn on the inside and the bushes were well worn. The only other thing changed was a new gearbox/drive shaft boot and a top up of gearbox oil.
