Hi can anyone help ive got a 1.6 petrol multi and started it up yesterday an it seems like its running on 3 cylinders , ive not changed the plugs yet but could this possibly be down to the crank sensor as ive now got engine control warning and buzzer from the dash ! When i first bought the car i had the same warning buzzer and it turned out to be the crank sensor ? Any help or info appreciated thanks gaz

The 1.6 isn't my thang, but several on here have had problems with the coil pack / leads. Might be worth checking them as well. With the engine running, pull the plug leads off one at a time. The one that makes no difference to the way the engine runs will tell you which is the duff cylinder. Then swap the plug for that cylinder with one of the others and repeat the lead-pulling test. If the fault has moved to another cylinder, your spark plug is at fault; if it's in the same place as before, your coil or lead(s) are the problem.

thanks mate will try, ive ordered a new crank sensor just to be on the safe side , thanks for the help its appreciated gaz

A slight variation on the above theme.

Once you have identified which is the duffer cylinder (using the method above) simply disconnect that lead, then WITH THE ENGINE OFF, plug a spare plug into that lead and Earth the outer metal body of the plug to a suitable earth point on the engine (any exposed nut or bolt will do), then start the car. If you see the spark plug sparking merrily away with a GOOD spark, then the lead and the coil are good. Take out the old plug and replace it with the one you have just used to test the spark. If the engine still does not run right then start looking elsewhere.

May save some time

FYI, Spark Plugs MUST be gapped correctly. Establish what the relevant gap should be and then using a feeler gauge set the electrode accordingly. You can't just take them out the box and shove them in. Also if the plugs haven't been changed for a good while the gap naturally degrades and becomes larger. This significantly reduces the magnitude of the spark which accordingly has a very detrimental effect on combustion.

Mine has been doing this. I've done plug, leads compression test what all turned out fine. I've narrowed it down to being damp because of the awful wet weather we're having. I sprayed the ecus and anything electrical with wd40 and since doing that all has been well.

hiya yeah ive tried cleanin the connections up on the coil and replaced the plugs but im gettin no change in engine from number 1 cylinder so might try a coil pack ? at first i thought it was damp somewhere because i think ive hit every puddle lataly and it was running fine the day before , ive also tried swapping the leads around and still dead on cylinder 1 ? im still waiting for a new crank sensor to arrive so i can try that , thanks for all the info lads its appreciated gaz

Hi there,

I had this problem a few years back with my 1.6 petrol - it was the coil pack - around £50 I recall....

Simple job to fix - as most problems are with the 1.6.....even if the fuel economy is not great...!

Which the plug spark test I outlined previously would identify ASAP. You can't simply swap leads willy nilly. You can swap 1&4 with each other and 2&3 with each other BUT NOT 1-2 or 2-4 this is because the firing order is 1342. Cylinders 1&4 go up and down together as do 2&3 and the ignition coils are timed to fire accordingly.

Why do things the hard way when there is a simple way ????

Indeed coil packs are all too common a failure these days, but to be honest even in the old days of points and condensers the coil would break but all 4 cylinders would cease firing

Hi, :)
have you put the lead + plug onto a metal surface.., and checked for a spark..,
then move the DEAD plug+lead on to a different coil slot.., if it works on 3 x coil slots..but repeatably DEAD on the one--then it's the coil,;)
thats what I did ..,as didn't want to spend £50 on a coil I didn't need..,

yeah thanks lads theres a few things i want to try ill get to it over the next few days im just waitin for this pissin rain to stop an give me a few hours at least lol :bang:

Hiya lads just an update....tried new plugs..checked leads..was convinced it was coil pack so replaced it ..and still has missfire so goin to try cam sensor when it arrives , will let you know the results cheers gaz

Hiya lads quick update...the missfire problem has been narrowed down to number 1 injector , can anyone please advise ..to get access to the injectors 1.6 16v do you have to remove the inlet manifold or can you get to them by just removing the big airbox from the top of the engine ? Thanks and regards gaz

Hi,
have you got any fault code numbers..?

if the ECU is detecting an injector fault.. rather than unburnt fuel.. or misfire

access will certainly be better with airbox removed ( I've not worked on your engine..)

Charlie

Hiya yep detecting injector fault number 1 gettin 14.1 resistance on rest of injectors an unuasually high reading on number 1 its 46.7

Im having a go now to dismantle parts ...got up to tryin to move the rail bar but its solid

Lol i know that got the rail out now just got to get new injector , thanks for the info ill keep you posted on how i get on cheers gaz

Hi they have a number on the side of the injector mine is iwp 109 cheers gaz

Do,s anyone know what the difference is with fuel injectors for fiat multipla 1.6 16v petrol ? Reason im asking is the one im replacing has iwp 109 stamped on the side but when i come to look for a replacement some sellers on fleabay are selling iwp 001 saying this replaces iwp 109 and iwp 604 which fits also merea and stilo ( same engine ) ?? Its the difference in cost aswell thats throwing me , any info / help appreciated cheers gaz
