Just joined the forum after purchasing F'ugly, a 2002 JTD SX 12 months ago with only 42K on the clock. Its been pampered like a new baby with just about everything been replaced over the years including the windscreen!!! I recently replaced the trailing arm bearings which I was dreading having read some of the stories from hell on the forum, but everything came apart a dream and both sides only took me 2 hours
F'ugly runs like a dream but recently I noticed a rapid continual clicking from the engine whilst travelling - if I depress the clutch pedal a tiny bit it stops which leads to think its the clutch release bearing.
I have all the paperwork which shows a new clutch was fitted at 38K but not a DMF. In the past I have run cars for ages with a worn release bearing but not sure of the habits of "F'ugly" but can only assume if it is the release bearing I may as well go the whole hog and fit the whole clutch assembly as I intend to drive down to its new home in Portugal
Any comments would be much appreciated:)

The release bearing should only come into play when you press the clutch pedal, there fore if pressing the clutch pedal stops the noise its unlikely it is your problem (im not sure if you mean the noise goes or comes when you press the pedal)
If you don't mind elaborating a little that would be great.
Great find by the way... a JTD in such good nick with low miles makes ne jealous!!

Just re read your post...sounds like clutch plate fingers damaged/broken(im guessing your just tipping the pedal but not enough to disengage the clutch

Hi Thanks for your time.
The clicking is evident all the time whilst in gear and moving but by literally resting my foot on the clutch pedal it stops. Its not a loud clicking and could be mistaken to the non mechanically minded as part of the normal diesel rattle
Hope this gives you enough to advise me.

I assume the clicking gets faster with engine speed?
My guess would be a bent/damaged finger on the clutch pressure plate thats tipping off the release bearing...when you press the clutch pedal the release bearing presses the fingers enough to dampen the sound.
If it was DMF it would be more pronounced under load and the noise certainly would have no cause to stop by lightly applying the clutch pedal.
Id drive on for another while before condemning the clutch.
Marty.

Yes the clicking matches the engine speed. Thanks for your advice and think I'll drive on and see what happens although if I'm going to have to enter the inner bowels of the bell housing I might as well replace the clutch.
Just out of interest what noise does a failing DMF make??

Ive a DMF starting to fail on a mondeo...at the moment it is a faint clicking, but only under load...im sure it will eventually develop into a noticeable vibration.
From your description it is NOT your DMF.
Marty.
