i've an intermittent fault on my multi 115 it started a few days ago the managment light comes on with the message ' engine ctrl faulty contact garage ' there's no loss in performance , mpg is the same , essentially if it wasn't for the fact the light comes on you wouldn't tell any difference in it at all , i plugged it into my laptop using multiecuscan but it doesn't recognise either the cable or port settings now i'm a bit of a computer numpty so i'm not going to start messing with any settings on the pc (not that i can even find them :D ) so i've a universal code reader coming to hopefully at least give me a code or codes to work on , after a bit of searching and reading it seems the maf sensor could have been the likely culprit so i took it off and gave it a clean replaced it but the light was still there so took it for a 20 minute drive then the light went out :) when i stopped and went to the car half an hour later it initially didnt come on for five minutes orso but then appeared again with the same message  i doubt it's the egr valve as i took that out and removed all the soot and gunk about 2 month ago , so any ideas where to start while i wait for the reader and i've checked all the pipe work for kinks, splits , cracks etc hopefully it'll be a quick easy fix any pointers would be appreciated , thanks (y)

It is interesting that with the engine control light on you are not going into limp mode which is what normally happens. i.e. cannot get the car to rev much over 2,800 rpm unless going downhill. Anyway, the thing I have noticed most with Multipla ownership is that whatever you do to it, the chances of causing another problem is likely as a result of disturbing the thing. My guess is that it is one of the two items you have been cleaning that is the first place to look. The other little wrinkle is that just by the EGR valve along the back of the inlet manifold is a connector which is attached to the MAP sensor. Normally you unclip the connector when taking the EGR off and sometimes you can think you have put it on and it is actually just resting on the contacts. I had one which was not quite locked in and it gave me the engine control light run around for a week or so until I figured out what I had done.
Another point was that I tried to clean my EGR valve and found that it was too far gone and only a replacement solved the engine control light coming on at 2800 rpm. Be interesting to know what you find.

Stephen

stillwaiting for the code reader so when that arrives i'll hopefully have somewhere to start and no mate , no limp mode or nothing like i say if it wasnt for the fact the light is on you wouldn't tell any difference at all and i've diconnected/re-connected everything twice just to make sure but all semms ok , the light will come on for a while then as if by magic it'll go off again
