I want to remove the fuel pump in my 02 1.9 jtd. I presume it is in the fuel tank? Access to tank sorted and fuel and electricals disconnected. I believe that the next stage is to loosen the 6 inch (Approx) nylon looking ring/cap that sits on top of the tank? I assume it is a normal Right Hand Thread? Using a modified draper bicycle chain type oil filter remover and a very long bar I was able to put one hell of a force onto this cap/locking ring but it would not shift. I even managed to break three of the chain links - less spinach tomorrow I think!!! What am I doing wrong? Surely it cannot be that tight? Any help gratefully received.
Michael

From the look of the picture on ePER it has a screw-on lock ring:

Have you tried dowsing it with penetrating fluid and leaving for a few hours?

Thank you very much for the reply. Your diagram is exactly how I thought it was installed. I had not tried penetrating oil because 'nylon' is usually self lubricating and there will be no corrosion. It is unbelievably tight - the suspension bolts I did last year didn't require this amount of force!

There's a 'How To' in the Engine Management section here:

https://sites.google.com/site/fiatmultipla/Home/repairs

They show a special tool that acts like a claw. I suspect the method you've been using (with a chain wrench) is gripping the lock ring onto the tank because it's flexible, so the harder you try to turn, the tighter it grips the thread. It might be worth using a block of wood on one of the teeth on the lock ring and gently tap it around with a hammer. There won't be any clamping force around the ring doing it that way.

An alternative would be to make a tool like the 'claw' out of some thick bits of steel strip. Building restraint strap would be ideal.

You make a great point about the clamping action and the little diagram I can see at the link you provided is very helpful. Tomorrow morning I will try plan B! Many thanks for your help.

I had the same problem. I took a length of bar about a 8mm thick and bent it into a "U" and then cut two grooves in the tips of the "U" which located in the lugs on the plastic "nut" I then put a bar through the "U" and it came out no problem. A very cheap special tool.

Hi there,
Just done this very same thing 10 mins ago, manufactured a tool from some screwed rod and a bit trampoline pole, with flats ground on it, also poured a kettle of boiling water on first.

If you have the big nut off for any length of time, the tank will distort (depending on how much fuel is in it) making it difficult to refit.
Always screw the nut on while prepping the pump.

Ask me how I know :bang:

I did find a twix wrapper floating around, but the tank was nearly full so I couldn't see the bottom.
