Earlier this week my JTD lost power at low revs below 2000-2500 rpm, really sluggish and just doesn't want to rev. Above 2000 - 2500 rpm it seems pretty normal. After reading several threads on hear I have come to suspect that the MAF is the problem but still a little unsure. On a number of threads it has been suggested to disconnect the MAF to see if this improves things. I have tried this with little to no improvement and clouds of black smoke, does this mean that I can now discount the MAF?

If it's not the MAF can anyone suggest other areas to look at?

Starts fine and runs smoothly, just no power at low revs.

One thing I didn't mention is that the EGR valve was blanked off earlier in the year, not sure if this is at all relevant but chucking it in the mix just in case.

I have just had another go at disconnecting the MAF and took it for a longer drive and there was an improvement in low rev performance although nowhere near back to normal.
There was also still clouds of sooty black smoke as previously mentioned, is this normal with MAF disconnected? I ask this as no one has mentioned this in other threads.

I assume from what I have read elsewhere that this re-test strongly points to the MAF so unless advised otherwise I think I'll bight the bullet and fork out for a new one tomorrow.

Try using the advance search tool; put 'black smoke' as the search term and restrict results to the Multipla section. You'll get loads of results returned, most of them focussing on either the EGR or MAF. Is the EGR blanked at both ends? Someone on here (Slobo?) pointed out that it should be blanked at both ends. To tempt a dubious answer, where did you put your blanking plate?

It was only blanked at one end, the end easiest to get at nearest the cylinder head I think. This was done several months ago and resolved a different problem, appalling performance and loads of black smoke; worked a treat :).

Many thanks for your help, now to try your suggested search

Have you tried running it with the EGR blanking plate removed and the MAF disconnected? I've got a single EGR blanking plate fitted to mine, but must admit that it made next to no difference to how it ran before fitting; I had no real cause to fit one - was just curious to find out if it made as much difference as some folks here say.

Your previous problem sounds as though it had very similar symptoms! If it were my car, I'd try a thorough cleaning of the EGR as next step, then try running without the blanking plate fitted.

Well I had made an assumption that it was not a recurrence of the EGR problem as it was blanked off. But as suggested I have checked it out and the biscuit tin blanking plate was not up to the job and had a hole burnt through it. I've now replaced it with a 2mm thick s/steel plate so hopefully there will be no more trouble with the EGR :D.

A big thanks to widemouthfrog for pushing me in the right direction and saving me a small fortune in bits I didn't need and possibly garage bills as I was close to letting someone else look. Should we ever meet I think I owe you a pint or three (y)

Well as it's unlikely that we'll ever meet and after seeing your status as a "Donated Member" I thought that was a good alternative way of thanking for the help (y)
A great forum with some very helpful and knowledgeable people, worth every penny

I was about to write that this was exactly what happened to me, too thin a blanking plate and got a hole in it.
Glad you got it sorted.
