Hi guys

Having problems with my spare wheel carrier, does any one know if there is another Fiat that has a mechanism that will fit the Multi

She's an 08 plate Eleganza

Cheers

If it's the same mechanism as on the real Multiplas :)p), which I suspect it will be, it's a common problem.
It's basically a s**te design, poorly executed, with cr**y materials . . . apart from that it's fine!
There is a mod that replaces it with a fixed piece of threaded rod (studding), the spare is held on with a nut.
You can fit a full-size wheel under there as well, in place of the poxy little space-saver thing

Pictures are gone, but you'll get the general idea . . .
Spare wheel issues . . .

Have you got more detailed information how to do the modification to take full size wheel?

Basically, you remove the entire mechanism from the car, make a note (or take a pic) of where the wheel hanger is in relation to the mounting, and then cut the winder mechanism off the three-bolt mounting plate, which you keep.

(The winder mechanism can then be sacrificed to whatever god deals with mechanical design)

Now you need a length of studding, I'd use 12mm, get it welded to the mounting plate in the correct position (as determined above), it obviously needs to be long enough to pass through whatever wheel you're using as a spare, plus 60mm or so for the retaining nut and washer(s).
The wheel needs to be hung with the outer face downwards, otherwise the face of the wheel will bear on the mounting, scratching it to bu**ery in no time.
It could be mounted the other way up, but you'd need to have a spacer machined up to fit snugly in the centre bore, to keep the wheel from touching the mounting.

You'll need a large washer to go between the wheel and securing nut, it needs to be larger than the centre bore on the wheel, obviously.
Stick a bit of rubber between the washer and wheel to prevent scratching, if it's an Alloy wheel.

If welding's not an option, you may be able to drill the plate and attach the studding with a couple of lock-nuts either side.
I'n not sure, as I've not done it myself, I simply keep a full-size spare and small trolley-jack in the 'boot'.
Will get round to it one day I guess . . .

I did mine.
Do as the doc says.. Take unit down.
I re used the piece that holds up the wheel.
I used threaded bar and I was able to do it without welding. I think I spilt the unit open and put lock nuts on the bar and closed up the unit again trapping the nuts leaving the threaded bar hanging down.
It's a total bitch of a job though to hold the wheel up the unit and bolt if in place bug hey it's out if the boot!
Marty.

Works fine... Tough to hold the wheel up though with one hand trying to run the nut on with the other... Leave a bit of extra thread hanging down will make life easier
Marty.

I found 301635041408 on ebay.
But before that I was considering cutting a spare wheel well out of a scrap car and grafting it into the floor of the multipla.
It would then mean lifting the carpet to get the spare out like our old UNO.
I shall keep a Puncturesafe kit from now on, I am getting too old to grovel under cars now.
