Mangoletsi are selling a 2010 Multipla Eleganza in Knutsford (we are in London) - whenI rang up about it Jim said someone else was interested but had had trouble getting finance, but that they would reserve it for us if we put down a £250 deposit.

Is this usual/reasonable?

We said we would need the deposit back if it failed an AA inspection. They said they would either repair any faults or refund the deposit.

How wise is it to buy from a dealer so far away?

How will we know if they've actually repaired any faults the AA find?

Any advice gratefully received.

Charlie

You are fully entitled to your deposit back within 7days. Any faults need to be put in writing and they can show you an internal invoice with what work has been carried out. You have more rights buying from a dealer. You can take a vehicle back up to six months with any faults found. If you take out a warranty make sure it covers wear and tear. All other warranties cover failed items, not things on there way out. You may also have to pay and upfront diagnostic charge. If there are faults GET THEM IN WRITING ON THE SALE INVOICE, and agree with the sales person what work is to be carried out. Be specific what you want doing, from mats to a full tank or having a scratch painted….. Make sure the tyres have 4mm plus as most manufactures recommend changing at 3mm and don't be fobbed off by cheap crap tyres, tell them what you want. Keep it friendly and build a good rap or with your sales person. If you buy it make sure you deal with the service department. Sales people sell cars service fix them…. If you need more advise just ask… A deposit is quite resonable to secure a vehicle. Write on the order form RETURNABLE DEPOSIT!!!!!
