Well, you have at least explained why some folks here say "What are you talking about, it fits easily", while others swear blind there's no way to get it in/out without (re)moving the driveshaft.

Looks like you'll have to loosen the halfshaft mountings. Have you seen this thread?:

Can you post a photo of the back ends of the two alternators, showing the Denso spec labels?

The 100A one looks A LOT bigger. Are the two black plastic mouldings on the back ends the same size?

Do you reckon you could get the Multipla scissor jack between the back of the engine block and the bulkhead, then use it to push the engine forwards (gently!)? I'm trying to visualise it now, but thinking the steering rack will get in the way.

I don't know, will have to have a look.

Yes the plastic bit is bigger on the newer one.

There are plenty of alternators on ebay right now with same model number, only that means waiting a couple days
 
I've just been digging through the Denso alternator application charts. Saved out the Multipla page as I though it may help.

Curious thing is, they don't list a 100A one for any version of the Multi. Also, their part numbers don't seem to appear anywhere on the labels in the photo you posted.

Using the larger capacity alternator won't do any harm. So it's just a case of getting the bloody thing in there. One of the OS engine mounts will need to be unbolted; not sure if it'll be best to do the top one (up by the top of the OS strut) or the bottom front one. I think the latter will give you more freedom of movement, but it's harder to get at and you'll have to push a lot harder to move the engine - hence the scissor jack suggestion. The top mount is easy to unbolt bot I'm not sure if it will give you much free movement in the direction you need it. Might be worth trying that one first though, as it's easy to do. I need to look at my car in daylight to make sure.

Yes I think it was you or portland Bill who suggested the higher amp one in the first place, just wasn't expecting it to be actually bigger lol.

The side one I know where it is and it's easy deffo, the other one i'm guessing is in the area where I am under the car?
 
It's forward/outboard of the engine block, underslung from the chassis rail that runs across the front of the car and not very easy to get at. Item 1 in the picture. Also, once released, the engine will drop as it hangs from the mount.

The top tie is item 7. That's just a stabiliser to stop the engine rocking about too much, so doesn't bear the weight of the engine.

You need to shift the bottom of the engine forward, taking the gearbox and halfshafts with it. So taking the front mount (1) out of the way makes sense as that's fixed to the bottom half of the engine. However, as you lol'd, everything will drop like a stone & will probably be a pig to get back into line. You could put a jack under the engine, but I'm not sure how kindly the cast alloy sump on the JTD will take that sort of treatment. Others here may be able to advise. Taking the top link (7) out however is easier to do and the engine will just sit there, even with the link bolts (11) or (9) removed. I'm not sure how much extra clearance you need to get the alternator in, but if it were me, I'd try releasing the top link, then put the scissor jack under something solid at the back of the engine to 'tip' it forwards. It will likely pivot on the (1) engine mount but may give you the space you need.
