Anybody got a suggestion as to what may cause brake judder that only happens when braking from high (i.e. motorway) speeds after running without applying the brakes for several minutes?

If progressively apply the brakes, the judder subsides; come off the brakes and then reapply them and everything's fine (no judder). If I stand on the brakes to bring the car down from, say, 80mph to near standstill in one go, I get judder right the way down. It's as though something has to be re-centred after being thrown out of true when rotating at high speed. I'm getting some vibration back through the steering wheel running at 75+mph, no brakes applied. The car doesn't pull to one side under braking. Could corrosion of the alloy wheels on their mounting face cause this?

I had a similar thing on my original Multi, but it was more of a grating than a judder.
Turned out to be that the plastic bushes for the sliding part of the front calipers had gone soft, like rubber.
When I braked hard, the moving part of the caliper was being forced out against the inner surface of the rim.
Took me a while to find it, because every time I took the wheel off to check the brakes, I'd stand the wheel up against a wall (with the inner against the wall), so I didn't see the marks on the rim.

It was only when one time I stood the wheel the other way round that I saw it.

I doubt it's the wheel mounting, unless the bolts aren't properly tightened.
The wheel is held central on the hub by the boss, so unless you have non-standard wheels with an incorrect bore size, it can't be that.

It's an odd one for sure.

Does it feel like the ABS kicking in?
Could it be the ABS playing up?
Mine judders sometimes if I brake on a rutted/potholed surface, but I suspect one or both of my front dampers are on the way out, that can make a wheel 'skip' when braking on rough roads, causing the ABS to kick in.

That's all that springs to mind at the moment . . .

I have the exact same symptoms on my Citr**n.

As yet I haven't found the cause.

Tell us if you find anything.

Just realised why I can't find my clock dial. I lent it to a mate at the end of last year. Since then, he's moved away from the area. In the word of the Fast Show - Bugger.

If you get a new one, can I borrow it ? :D

I have a similar problem (but my brake judder started sometime after having a front wheel bearing replaced, then replaced again because it was 'faulty' - more likely badly put on - so who knows what battering the disks had whilst they fought the bearings out and in).

hi first thing thanx for the info on my oil pressure switch.
i did have a steering judder on my multi when i first had it
at about 75mph.
it turned out to be the rear end both sides
when you looked at the car from the back both wheels
sat like this from the back / \ .
but mmmm u prob know all about the rear bushes going
mine was metal to metal and the whole lot had to be replaced
plus the arms.
ooooooo **** here i go again lol
