Hi,
Had our multi over 4 years now, had it's problems but we still love her.
Recently started to hear a grating whirling noise as I pull away.
The noise disappears if I press in the clutch.
With windows down I cannot hear it, but with them up it sounds like it's fairly central and low down ( say just forward of middle front passengers feet area).

Revving the car in neutral is fine - just notice it pulling away or slowing down.

Anyone any ideas ? , could it be clutch related?

Thanks.
Mark

If it's only when pulling away or slowing (on the over-run), then I'd say look at the CVs.
Does the noise alter if you're getting close to full steering lock, e.g. pulling away at a T-junction, or on an uphill tight bend?
If it's not the CVs, then it might be the gearbox/diff.

Probably not the clutch (or release bearing) I'd say, as they tend to be noisy when they're in use (pedal depressed).

Not sure about the DMF (flywheel), not had a problem with one yet . . . *touches wood*

Thanks Bike Doc, seems to be just pulling in 1st and 2nd gear and pretty much disappears at speed.
You notice it slowing down too.
Looking more like gearbox?.

Nightmare, spent close to £1,300 on her last few months after a Cambelt failure due to water pump sieze.

Never had an oil leak prior to the repair work but had a substantial one soon after repair, took her back to garage and they repaired some seals without further charge.

Still small leak from gearbox area that was never there before.

Repair job was valves, head skim etc.
Hope this isn't legacy from the cam failure

Could be gearbox input bearing. This is put under greatest load in 1st/2nd gear. You also say you've got an oil leak, which is a typical tell-tale for a shot input bearing and seal. Does the oil smell of gearbox or engine oil?

Any judder when pulling away?

Yeah this is exactly what happened to mine. I've assumed diff bearings but maybe it's the input bearing? I'm whipping it off on friday. Are these easy to replace?
