Hello Folks,

The last few days I've noticed my Multipla engine is racing with the revs going up to 2000 with my foot off the pedal. Could it be anything to do with the hot weather? MAF sensor? No expert, so don't know...

Both mine have done this, mine bleeps with engine control fault and keeps the eml on the rest of the journey. Haven't had it plugged in yet tho to read the code

ive had same car since 2002 used to do this.blanked off egr valve never happened since 2yrs.Dont know but used to start after oil change think something in oil causing v/v to stick use oil for egr engines i use asdas own used to put foot under peddle and lift it stopped racing but not good also check connectors in passenger footwell people get in with wet shoes car goes nuts!!!

Did you get this sorted Mark?

3 years later and I think I've found the problem...

Engine has been racing again at idle - surging up to 3000/4000 rpm - and worryingly when I'm driving along.

Today I disconnected the MAF sensor - result: engine racing gone, idle normal about 1000 rpm, and if there's a drop in performance it's barely noticeable.

Local parts place quoted £71 + Vat for Bosch replacement, Ebay £25 delivered. Wondering if it's even worth replacing as I can't tell any difference with MAF disconnected. Might even be worth attempting to clean? Must be one of the most accessible parts on the car to remove/replace - at the front (and top) of the engine bay and just 2 x 10mm bolts and a hose clamp to undo...

This might also explain the engine warning light coming on intermittently.

Well you get the award for coming back and up dating us as to what happening, thank you

Update: Engine racing and engine warning light still gone. Maybe... car not starting as easily? Previously kicked into life first attempt, now takes a couple of attempts, however weather been bad recently. Thinking about getting one of these: a portable emergency battery starter and powerbank for the winter. One that will charge in-car, then plug into lighter socker overnight to keep car battery conditioned.

Part 3: Engine racing again. Intermittent. At idle was going up to 3000 revs and down again at random. Not the MAF as it's still disconnected. PS. I have done a service and changed oil in the last month.

What and where is an EGR valve anyone? And what is a v/v?
Would cleaning out some clogged up pipes somewhere help?

RSVP.

Mark

I can't think problem you have is related to egr valve.
Time to connect a laptop with multi ecu scan and look for problems.
