Hi all,

I went to give the Multipla 05 1.9JTD a quick look over today as the MOT is due in 2 weeks. Unfortunately the offside rear suspension rubber stop was rattling around in the spring! On closer inspection the metal 'inverted flat cone' that the mount attaches to and the spring locates over has virtually completely corroded away!!!

I assume that this is an automatic MOT failure??? The other side looks as if it will soon go the same way. Subframes cost a fortune - do I have any options? If the metal 'cones' are only for the bump stops and not for locating the springs can I just neatly cut them out and paint the subframe?

Many thanks
Mark

I would say, like a lot of other parts, that if it's fitted, then it has to be in good condition.

From the MOT tester's Manual;
Note: a missing bump stop rubber is not a reason for rejection.

So if you remove it, clean up the area it came from and re-protect (paint/underseal), then you're good to go. (y)

Many thanks BikeDoc - I'll give that a go and report back on pass/fail. I guess I should do both sides to make it look even!

Out of interest is the cone not need then to help locate the spring? I am just wondering if I should cut the cone 'flush' with the top of the subframe or try and leave a short 'stub' to slip the spring over?

Cheers
Mark

The end coil of the spring sits in it's own groove, so removing/trimming the bump-stop mount won't affect it.
My only concern would be the condition of the subframe in that area.
I'd remove the spring (which you'll need to anyway), and check it carefully.

Hopefully you'll find the corrosion is confined to the bump-stop mounting, I think it's a bit of a water-trap up there.
