Just had the contact garage alternator fault show on the dash display. Battery light staying on, sparky at work checked it over and it's not charging.....so next job is to replace the alternator...
Has anybody done one? and whats involved?

1.9 jtd… fun you mentioned about the casing cracking as up on the ramp you can see a crack in the casing. On of the techs is hopefully doing it Saturday.

All done today, we manage to get through the mornings work by 11.am. So was able to start, didn't do it myself. Two of the techs did it in about 1.5hrs tops. Watched for a bit and got out of the way!!! Way beyond what I could have done by myself. Now just need to sort the blowing exhaust front flexi pipe. Could do with some time off spending on the Multi as it's becoming a drain on the family finances…….
The alternator casing was also cracked when taken off, don't know if that was the cause of the failure or not. Got a Fohrenbuhl alternator for £139.00 from Andrew Pages trade discount! Had the Multi coming up six years in July and don't know how much it's cost to keep going in that time!!!! Seems to be nearly every month having to spend on the dam thing!!!

Just out of interest, did it come out without removing any major lumps, or lowering the subframe slightly?

Some claim it does, but mine definitely didn't.

I suspect there may be two or three different Alternators that will fit . . .

Funny you should ask.

I did the Alternator on my 1.9 JTD on Saturday. I did it on my back just jacked up both sides and put it on Stands.

I followed the suggestions from this forum, I moved the dipstick, this allowed me to lift the alternator back and down between the drive shaft and bulk head, Very tight and a bit of wiggling required. But I did not have to remove any thing else.

That said i did remove the front wheel, and inner plastic covers to get to the Alternator. The Alternator had cracks in the casing like a lot of the pictures i had seen, but it has done over 160 thousand so not too upset.

I did have a problem getting the replacement alternator through the gap as it was slightly bigger. :bang::bang::bang: I was in the middle of taking the back engine support off when I got my son to jack the engine between the gearbox and engine to take the weight. This lifted the engine just a little and the Alternator slipped through. Happy days.

I did have to move the inner spacers on the alternator and mounts to get lower bracket to fit. hammer and a long bar fixed that. :slayer:

The replacement Alternator cost me £119 with Delivery and a 18 months warranty.

Hope this helps

Andrew.

This job is quite straightforward and funnily enough I have a spare alternator which is very good condition and it is a genuine one [Denso] which fits a treat unlike some of the non-genuine replacements. Yours for £25 if you want it?

Stephen

it is the best one - 105 amp. Suitable for everything that is 1.9JTD. It is my spare alternator for my 2002 115 with air con. I will look at the numbers later and post them tomorrow.

Stephen

OK, my spare alternator has the following numbers on and remember it is a 105 Amp Denso unit. The numbers are 63321826 and 46782213.
Let me know. I bought it because I thought the new one I had fitted was on the blink as the battery was discharging and when I looked the main feed cable from the starter motor to the alternator had the starter motor end detached hence no charge and that is why I have a spare alternator I will never use!

The two numbers I have given you are what is written on the tab other than Denso; Made in Italy; C132 24002/3 then the two numbers I have given above and just above the bar code along the bottom it has A1151M 14V 105A.
If you give me an email address i will send you a photo of the tab on the alternator.
It cam from a more recent Multi with 50,000 miles on it.

Stephen
