Is 2mm aluminium man-enough for an EGR blanking plate or swirl plate ?

I was planning to clean out my EGR but, given the awkwardness of getting some of the bolts off, I decided to blank the EGR first, to confirm that this cures the problem.
(Problem: Very low power from idle to about 2000 rpm, then power kicks in and is normal; worst with cold engine; no fault codes generated).

I made two blanking plates from 2mm aluminium, and fitted them in place of the pipe, as shown, using M8 x 16mm bolts instead of M8 x 25mm.

This has cured the problem, so a blocked or damaged EGR is the cause (probably just blocked after 109,000 miles without a clean !).

If I either
a) leave the blanking plates as they are, or
b) clean the EGR; refit the pipe; and refit one of the blanking plates but with extra holes drilled in it to convert it into a swirl plate,
then is 2mm aluminium enough or will it suffer due to heat or corrosion ?

Or should I make a new plate out of stainless steel ?

2mm seems thick enough, I bought my aluminium one off Ebay £3.25, and slotted it in situ, but kept the thick corrugated metal connecting pipe, to keep it all clamped in place (as the flanges are quite thick and heavy duty).
Your setup looks neat, but I would worry about the all round seal, as there is no outside pressure on the edges like the stock setup.

Hi guys I'm thinking of doing this mod soon but was wondering how it affects the mot? Does it alter the emissions much? Just wondered.....

If an egr valve is fitted as standard it WILL have to be there for an mot.
Mate of mine had his car fail because of this mod.
Simple rule DON'T REMOVE AN EGR VALVE, if it's given up get a new one, it's fitted for a reason..........sinples

I'd be interested to know the reason given for failure. As T14086 says, the main reason for not doing it is one of morals. Even then, the average punter has no way of knowing precisely what the effect having it blanked is (in terms of emissions) on an ageing engine. Is there a cheap/easy way of checking N.O.?

I left the pipe in situ
Removed 1 gasket to make a template
replaced with a home made 1.5mm steel plate
Over 4 yrs ago
Passed every mot to date
Won't effect emissions test until 2025 when the uk conforms with eu n.o. Testing

In the 70's 80's 90's and 2000's we had 2 litre diesels doing 55mpg around and about, Interference by tree huggers and green sandal wearing eejits knocked our consumption down by 10-15+ MPG to satisfy their single issue whining. Every one on these whole Islands was affected and is to this day, including diluting the diesel's capacity [cetane] to make an explosion.

The EGR mod is legal, go for it, but make sure its reversible. Word in the tester's community is that CATs and EGR's will become part of the test. Mind you that was the case 5 years ago and every 12 months since. Morals don't come into it, money does - we have covered every green bit of the Islands and offshore areas with stupid little windymills that generate power at night when no one needs it and very little during the day when we do. Get a grip the £50 quid a month [two and a half time more per mW] we pay for greening on our leccy bills is a farce it does sod all for global warming - there's no evidence one way or the other that man caused it or man can cure it.

If you've ever been to the States, you'll be very sceptical about any of the 'green' things that we do here (recycling, car-sharing, etc), and just how little difference it must make to anything.

In the words of Lee Mack . . .
After going to America, recycling a few jars each week feels like turning up after a major earthquake to help clean-up, with just a dustpan and brush . . . :bang:

If any motorist was really concerned about their impact on the environment . . . they wouldn't be one

Blank the poxy thing off, I reckon the reduction in fuel you're burning with it blanked compensates for the minuscule increase in emissions anyway.

I, like others here, have gone through several MOTs without one fitted.

Thought this thread might come to this....
On a happy note...Yeah, we are all doomed anyway, just a matter of time, I doubt if all the emerging economies with massive populations, eg China, India, are worried about recycling, yeah right, recycling is for the rich minority, simply to make them feel less guilty, unless everyone in the world does it, it will make no difference, or by the time everybody gets the message it will be too late, has anyone seen pics of those islands which are covered in rubbish, and when the sea is high it floats and drifts away....
Off track a bit, and more of a moan, I do pick up rubbish from others occasionaly, cos no one else will..Maccy D boxes thrown out of car windows in country lanes, or beautifull sandy beaches in the UK with lager cans and glass bottles just visible out of the sand just waiting for some poor kid to step on, its the parents I tell you!!!!
Right time for a nice cuppa tea from my atomic powered kettle now...

My point in #10 , and I did not put it clearly is we have an emissions test. When they stick their pipe up and you pass - you pass - end of.

You have passed the test at the national standards [the UK & EURO directive 94/69] as they are currently set. Evangelical preaching by mods and lower order posters alike is unhelpful, particularly the case though those who are appointed on the basis of their capacity to be even~handed display a continuing serial tendency to preach a [see 3 years ago Feb 2011 - same subject. The tyre makers and distributing chain have been trying to get the UK motorist to have 2 sets of winter summer tyres for years doubling our costs and trebling their profits, their latest lobby is for a mandatory out~of~date where you need to buy and fit new tyres even if yours have only done 1000 miles.

Now I'd better exit stage door left before I become a self appointed 'preacher-man'.

Luckily, you're not the only one (y)

Was in Cyprus a couple of weeks ago (my eldest Daughter is living out there at the moment), there are signs on the Motorways about littering, max fine €854.
The speeding fine for a friend that was out there with us was €24 (for 124kph in a 100kph limit) . . . they have their priorities right (y)

The air quality in London or Paris back in the 70's, 80's, when 2.0 diesels did 55mpg, was undeniably terrible. No question what so ever that EGR and cat's have made a massive difference. I thank the tree huggers that got rid of lead in fuel as well.

Get real, we all benefit from better air quality, in China they know they have a problem and hopefully can see the benefits of the legislation we have here and use us as an example.

And here we are in the 10's, and our 1.9 Multiplas are doing 45mpg :p C'est la vie!

I really doubt EGR valves contribute very much to the reduction . . . Cats/DPFs/etc and generally more efficient engines certainly.

There would be a real jump in economy (and a corresponding reduction in emissions) if cars didn't weigh double what they did in the 70's as well, but apparently we (the motorists) want all the extra c#*p they load them with now

Good point...1980 peugeot 305 GR, the diesel of choice at the time 975kg. Even a sierra came in at just over 1000kg, a lot less than the new mini. Sorry about my rant by the way.
