Hi all. I'm now on multi #3 - yeah , it's ok, I'm already booked in to see the shrink... again!

When on the the road and cruising along all is well, no noises etc, however, when I stop, at traffic lights , at home or anywhere the engine rattles like a bag of spanners. It sounds like something loose, similar to a broken piece of metal vibrating against itself.
The car is otherwise faultless - as only Multie's can be faultless :)
Any ideas ?
Someone said it might be the internals of the 'cat' but I can't see how.

Your ideas and suggestions would be very welcome... with the exception of the gallon of petrol and a match (ha-ha)

Other likely culprits are one of the heat-shields on the exhaust system.
Start at the manifold and work your way down.

Could also be one of the belt tensioners or idler pulleys, although they usually don't sound so metallic.

My Alternator was quite rattly for a while, before it finally failed completely.

I had the same sort of noise, I changed the crank pulley, it's better but I think the noise is coming from the a/c pulley.

Hopefully it's not your Dual mass flywheel falling to bits.

I owe a massive apology to our honourable brethren for not checking back on my question, please forgive me.
I still have the same Multi with the same racket (it's done one or two miles since...)
Now is the time to renew the timing belt, so I'm going to get to the bottom of it at last. It'll be nice to get rid of the noise and have quiet again.
I'll come back with all the gorey details after the event...
George
