Hi All,

I'm getting the dash message and associated beep AIRCON FAULTY CONTACT GARAGE on starting. How can I get this off without doing any work to the air con itself? (It's never hot enough to warrant using it where I am.)

Thanks in advance for your help

Hi
this message appears sometimes if the outside temperature sensor is disconnected. The sensor is in the bottom of the drivers door mirror. Check the connector between the mirror and wiring loom, which is behind the plastic trim panel inside the car where the mirror is located.

The tell tale for what pig mentions is the outside temp display on the instrument panel, as this is fed from the same sensor. If the outside temp isn't showing, then there's probably a fault with the sensor in the mirror.

All of this assumes you've got a car with climate control (i.e. ELX roundnose models and most Elegance spec of the squarenose). Lower spec models with air con as opposed to climate don't have an external temp display on the dash and will be missing the little 'pip' that houses the sensor on the lower edge of the OS mirror.

I have just replaced the door mirrors on girlfriends Multipla and started getting faulty aircon message on dash (and no external temperature display). Didn't realise until now that there are different mirrors, some which house a temperature sensor for the climate control. I assume there is no shortcut to resolving this issue except sourcing another mirror. Is this problem only related to the drivers mirror or will I have to change both again?

You can pinch the sensor (the little 'pip' on the outer edge of the driver's-side mirror) and retro fit it to the new one. I've not done it myself, so can't tell you exactly what's involved in doing it, but try a search on the forum as someone posted a thread about this.

The climate control relies on the outside temperature sensor to function. The dash temperature display is provided courtesy of the same sensor.

I have the same problem on my 03 ELX. I swapped the engine a couple of years ago but didn't bother to have the A.C. regassed as it is never hot enough - I just open the windows and 2 sun-roofs. Obviously I didn't change the mirror. Every journey gives me half a dozen peeps and Air Con Faulty visit your MainStealer warnings, which is very distracting.
I can't see a way to stop the messages. I could have it regassed at a cost but would prefer to just disable the warnings.
