Changed the fuel filter on the Multipla, job went easily enough, I primed the fuel filter with ATF to clean the injectors out, started the engine and everything was fine.

Later I noticed the i'd forgotten to plug in the sensor which screws into the bottom of the filter, so I plugged it back in. now the damn thing has gone into limp mode, I have the EML light on and an error message sating something like "engine control fault, see garage" has appeared on the dash.

Also, the speedo has stopped working.

Any ideas? I'm stumped and the wife is fuming!

I've disconnected the battery for a few hours, but the problem persists.

Anyone?

I put a new fuel filter on, incase the other had been clogged somehow. As I was priming it by putting the ignition on and off the speedo started to randomly hover around 40 mph. Started it up and it's even worse, running like a bag of spanners and smoking like a bastard.

I've disconnected the MAF sensor but it made no difference to the running.

Also, the EGR valve has been blanked off.

At this rate it will be down EMR by the end of the week!!

Quick update,

The speedo now flicks between 35 and 45 mph regardless of speed. When the car is stationary the handbrake alarm goes off and the miles clock up as if the car is still moving.

Could the sensor be duff? Maybe the fuel filter change was a bit of a red herring?

Ive unplugged the speedo senor on the gearbox (it's the one below the gear change cables, right?) and with it disconnected the speedo stays on 0, with it plugged in it bounces around almost randomly. Is it safe to say the sensor has died?

Oh, incase nobody has guessed, it's a JTD!

Yes that's the speedo sensor..
Make sure you get the correct sensor as I've found out that there are at least 2 different sensors fitted..
I have one version that I no longer need and was going to put on ebay..

Can't see why that would make it go into limp mode though

While I was frantically interrogating google, trying to find out what was wrong I read that the Speedo sensor also feeds the ECU, so that could cause it to go into limp. How do I find it what sensor I need?

A mate of a mate has offered to put it on a diagnostics machine this week so hopefully I'll find out exactly what's up.

How do I find it what sensor I need?

Go on ePER (link at top of page) and click through to the point where you see a small box on the left to put your VIN number in (the VIN will be on your V5 registration doc). Hit the magnifying glass next to the box, then the 'next' button on the following page. From there on in, any parts you search for that aren't suitable for your car are shown greyed out.

That should allow you to find the right part number for your car.

Thanks for that, Looks like I need this item..

46817375 SENDING UNIT

naread.exe

Now to track one down!

I can easily find a similar sender with the number 46817374 but the one above seems pretty elusive.

The differences between versions of some parts is often very minor. It may be worth contacting the seller (if you're looking at the ones I am, on ebay) and asking if they're compatible.

Is that second number shown greyed out on ePER?

The speedo unit that I have spare has part number 46758009
So I'd suggest you take your old one off and check against that, as they are slightly different

I'd definitely get a scan done on the ecu as it shows you all the values as it's starting, running etc and saves loads of time.
It'll show the sensors values and voltages so you can see what it's doing.
The error codes will be shown too which can be helpful, as I guess you'll have a couple by now at least.

Hi all,

I had the Multipla scanned today, here are the fault codes...

The following could be reset and didn't come back,
P1555
U1600
P0500
P0180

These are on full time and can't be reset,
P1612
P0236
P0404
P0638
PO645
P0101

The fella told me that the battery is only knocking out 6v and the clutch pedal switch seems to be sticking. He thought that many of the problems could be due to the diesel filter sensor not being connected up (the wiring is damaged) and the MAF meter being on the blink. Oh, and the speedo sensor is kaput!

He didn't charge me, I think he felt sorry for me!

I'm not surprised he took pity on you with that little lot . From the top, with a bit of a google:

P1555 - Throttle position sensor - probably a dodgy contact in the white cable connector under the dash. Lots on here about fixing that. Cost is usually a bit of WD40 and a piece of paper towel
U1600 - Immobiliser fault; key not recognised. Probably due to your duff battery.
P0500 - Vehicle speed sensor error. Not sure, but could be the battery again. Or the speed sensor as discussed earlier.
P0180 - Fuel temp sensor malfunction (that'll be the filter one!):

On to the 'sticky' ones:
P1612 - See post #4 : https://www.fiatforum.com/doblo/77939-ecu-error-codes.html . Probably glow plugs (cheap) or glow plug relay (not so cheap)
P0236 - Probably the one responsible for limp mode. Boost pressure solenoid for the turbo. This is a common fault.
P0404 - That'll be the EGR. Give it a clean or blank it.
P0638 - Something to do with throttle position. Not sure what, though!
P0645 - Aircon Clutch relay control. Not seen that one before. Didn't even know it could flag a fault.
P0101 - MAF circuit range fault.
