They will be polished by the bearing, but should not be significantly worn, unless you spend a lot of time stationary with foot on clutch. Is the bearing seized or tight?
If fingers are well polished, and area is quite large, this might suggest a misalignment between bearing and cover. If bearing moves on a sleeve/gearbox nose, is it worn, or fairly snug. Is gearbox aligned properly with the engine? Whilst it should have dowels to locate it, these can be misplaced, or forced, causing the location hole to be enlarged. Such a problem will also cause the centreplate to be very rattly as all the components wear rapidly due to the eccentric motion. Wear area on cover and flywheel would be larger than diameter of plate.
Why did you remove the gearbox? Has the clutch failed? How old is it age/miles?
