I changed my wife's Glowplugs today and I have to say it was nowhere near as complicated as the myriad of posts that I found on the net (and on this site) lead me to believe. The secret is to remove the complete EGR system and UNBOLT (note NOT remove) the fuel return manifold. In order to do the former I removed the entire air filter housing which necessitated taking off the from air intake scoop, removed the right hand side plenum housing (to provide more room for my big hands, and finally the EGR.

Once this was done, using the correct tool, which I bought off eBay, getting them out and back in was relatively easy. Two had gone high resistance whilst two were OK.

In my view if you are good with a set of spanners this is not a job to shy away from.

My job for tomorrow will be to decoke the entire EGR system and ancillary pipes, reassemble all the top end items and then change the cambelt which I last did 5 years ago ( although only 30K miles)
 
Indeed I am aware that the injection auto-retards sufficiently at cold start to not require the glow plugs down to -10c. However I am also aware that from this year a engine warning light is reason for an MOT failure. As such I figured why not just do them.
 
My Glowplug warning has been coming on after every start-up for months now, always starts instantly hot/cold/damp/rain/shine (y)


I put that down for causing a cooked relay on our old JTD,

did the old thing of starting o.k. then flashing the fault and dying @ 30 seconds later,
would start instantly then RUN o.k., a new set of plugs fixed it..,

however the"not-recognising-CODE" , was a REAL PIA,
took ages to locate the problem.

I've been put off attempting this job even tho I've a new set of plugs sitting in the shed... I'm gonna tackle it now.
Can you tell me what tool you are referring to???
I have long reach sockets and a knuckle for using with them which I had hoped would do.

Here is a pic of the tool . It is a 3/8" drive and I had to use another short extension to get the right amount of travel into the plug socket.

I also recommend you put the car on ramps, certainly saves on the old back and easier to find things you drop on the floor

There are two pipes coming out the EGR valve, don't even bother trying to get the bottom off from the EGR but rather take it off by removing this flange

Good luck and make sure you have some fire hose clamps available for the oil breather pipe and the air intake pipe that connects to the bottom of the plenum housing. Fiat have used one time use clamps which you obviously need to break to get off.

just saying - that's what we did, assuming it was the glow-systems warning..,
sisters car had done this ( to them) for 6 months,
I borrowed it - cut out, they said "oh-it always does that..",
I thought = bloody dangerous..!!,
so swapped a set of plugs,
fault never reoccurred,
however we had the cold weather issue with the CODE system - perfect over 20'C.
 
Here's the thing. I really don't care. The warning light is no longer flashing and I won't need to do them again for many years. So as far as I am concerned it was a job worth doing and a remarkably simple one as well. I posted this for this who like me want to get rid of the light not for those who are happy to ignore it.
 
Im with you glowplug...i know people say their JTD's work fine without them but i really notice mine runs rougher than id expect after startup on cold mornings.
It will be the next job I tackle(planned job that is :p ) and ill be referring to your post.

Glowplug. This is a genuine good post and should also be in the Stilo forum, as posts on JTD's in that forum are always a least 1 a week. Thankfully I do not have a JTD anymore. I note the pictures of the JTD engine and access to to the glow plugs is reasonable, but on a Multijet engine access is nigh on impossible. Took my husband ages to set up the fuel rail after the remap, like you needed to remove the EGR and that monster air flap control valve with the airbox, which is mm's from the monster Bosch battery on a Multijet.

There will always be some that moan an groan of not having to do something preventitive, thus instead will play a game of chance of breakdown or terminal failure. (y)
 
Possibly but the cold start prob started same time as glow plug light started flashin.
It's not really a problem.., it's just more easily stalled when taking off for first time in colder weather.. And feels a little rougher.
