Technical Wheelbearing leak?

Shouldn't be any oil in the bearing, it should be grease. (Rather thicker)
Brake fluid leaking from the caliper is a serious problem.
If leak is from bearing, then it is getting very hot and melting the grease. Needs to be replaced immediately. Eurocarparts, about £33 for the bearing.
If brake is binding, that can melt the bearing grease.
Also check its not melted grease from the CV joint.
 
If it is from the CV joint, the gaiter will have a hole or split in it or it will be leaking out past the clips. (less likely)

With the wheel off, the CV gaiter should be visible behind the brake disc. It should not be oily/greasy on the outside. Wipe the gaiter and examine it for any holes or splits. If caught early a new gaiter and some grease is all it needs. (Item 3 on the pic)

Excellent thanks! Yes there was oil/grease around it so guess there must be a split in it then and hopefully caught early enough as I only had the wheel off last week to try my new 17" wheel on and there was no oil/grease at all anywhere then.

Now, just had a look and to do this job the hub needs to come off :rolleyes: best left to a garage to do?
I'm always happy to try, but don't have a tool that big.... anyone know the size needed?
 
Its a big nut, very tight, then the CV joint may be tight in the hub. Getting the CV joint off the shaft can be a hassle, and very messy. If you don't know how to, or can get help from someone who knows, best left to a garage. Nut size is just a case of measuring it across its diameter in mm. Torque setting when retightening is critical, so needs a torque wrench.

I'm disappointed its not fixed yet. Every day it is used with grease leaking, the more likely you are to need a new CV joint. More expense! Also grease can find its way onto the brakes. As well as then pulling hard towards the opposite side, (possibly very risky), it will need new pads and a thorough clean up.

Avoid the quick fix of a split gaiter. These can be fitted without removing anything, and are glued together, but rarely last very long.

Just not driving it, so won't damage it, but agree should have had it done ages ago, it's just that annoying thing money I have to worry about...:rolleyes:(n)
