I'm tying to do a DIY clutch change on my multipla... after may trapped fingers and that darn starter motor bolt, the gear box is finally out:slayer:.. Now then.. trying to get the clutch to line up but I'm having trouble, the friction plate spline seem to be smaller than the flywheel? only thing to align against is the small bit right inside which I think is the crankshaft?

Have I got a bit missing off the DMF or is this just how it is??

Any advice or sugestions would be really appreciated!! Cheers

Did mine (jtd) 2 years ago, lots of good posts on here and i think a guide somewhere.
I brought a very cheap laser clutch alignment tool,it wasn't great but with much wiggling and brute force it went in,devilish awful job took me about 11 hours. I am pretty certain there was no bearing in the end of the crankshaft. Compare your new clutch parts with the old. The driven plate must go in the right way round or you will be doing it again. Search old posts, some good advice on there.
Good luck.

That was the guide I refered to when removing everything, a good guide I must admit but it doesnt really refer to any difficulty aligning the friction plate.

As an update this afternoon an attemp was made to install the new clutch and... I've broke the new friction plate... the spline follower has come out of the metal press on the back... Still think there should be a spacer or something behind it because surely this should not happen?

With a bit of wiggling and the usuaul heaving it felt like the spline had gone in nice, the thrust bearing was still in place but when the gearbox was bolted up the clutch lever floated around, so the box came off again and the centre of the friction plate was sat floating around in the back of the flywheel.:bang:

Have I got a faulty part becuase in the past this has never happened on any other car?? bit unsure because its the first multiplier I've worked on?

I could really do with the snow doing one and the warmer weather from last week back........

If i am understanding you right your friction plate is now broken? Wow never heard of that,it should be nearly impossible. Don't know if it was faulty or you may have inavertantly put some stress on it by levering and wriggling the gearbox. Either way sounds like you need a new one. Thats real bad luck.

Yep, friction plate is in 2 pieces... friction plate in one hand the centre spline follower in the other..

Didnt give it that much force, lets face it there really is not that much room to do so!!

If I can get back through the blizzards forecast for today I will return it to the local motor factors and see what they say...

I've searched all forums, googled it and cant find anyone whos doen this either... or that stupidly admits to it anyway!!

Stupid question do u own the disc manual as they do no Haynes manual for these it should give u pictures of how it's done

Yeah got one off ebay, not that easy to use.. still didnt really show how the plate should line up, but then again theres that many aligning tools you could use it wouldnt be possible...

Pop along to a garage like mr clutch and just enqire it can't hurt they maybe able to help u out stupid question have u made sure its got no notices or anything blocking it going bk in like something in the gearbox has dropped ie wiggle a screw driver around? Gentley

its the gearbox spline thats popped the centre of the friction plate out, more like there was something missing in the flywheel like a nylon spline guide or bearing, but looking at the pics I can find there doesnt seem to be anything amiss?

Its one of them things where if the engine was in an easily accessible place and you could just slide the gearbox in with plenty of room to get it in a good position, it may not have happened.. A small bit of force and jiggling has pushed the centre spline follower out of the spring fingers and into the vast space in the centre of the flywheel..

If anyone wants to pop to Mansfield and stick a new one in the car for me and rebuild FOC they are VERY welcome! tea and biscuits will be provided! A snow feature will also be built in their honor!

Would love to help but am about 300 miles away and tea and biscuits won't cut it
