Hi Guys/Gals,
Garage has just informed me that the rear subframe has failed the mot.
Bit suprised as it has less than 80,000 on the clock,
Been told that it will need replacing, yet to get a cost.
Any ideas on cost of replacement, avaliability etc, 2nd hand components would be a great help.
Sorry ment to say its a 53 plate,1.6.

Hi
would need your chassis number to confirm but i believe the one for your vehicle has a Fiat RRP of £702.13
may take me a week or so to get one but i should be able to do a brand new, genuine one for one for around £380.00

Why has it failed,is it due to corrosion as this is not so common, more often they fail due to the bushes failing. These bushes are not availiable separately so you are supposed to buy the whole sub frame complete with bushes from fiat. However.....some after market bushes have now appeared on the net and there is plenty of advice on here from forum members about fitting. Its not an exact replacement but it is safe and does pass an mot.The bushes front and back are about £100 I think.

Cheers guys, thanks for the replies.

Went to see the car today jacked up and yep it is well and trully shot, not just the bushes, very heavy corrosion, worst part was on the offside of the car.
they have quoted for a new sub frame (cant remember exact amount as cant find the bit of paper) £584+Vat for the sub frame plus 4-6 hours labour.

Robert what is the difference with the two you have quoted and what do the come with when they say complete (girl on the front desk didnt really seem to know).

Fiat modified them around 2003 (manufacture date) i believe the mounting are for the shocker to be different

The subframe is suppled with th bushes but doesnt include any nuts and bolts. Shockers and swinging arms are seperate

The Retail on both types is £585.11 + VAT (£702.13 incl)

Re: Multipla rear sub frame mot failure, need replacement and leaky Sump

Cheers, we are bitting the bullet and having a new one fitted and new shocks as well as one is shot so having the pair done, new handbrake cable as well, rest of the car looks pretty sound underneath bar the sump which is a little like a tea bag and needs replacing I have located one at a decent price, is it a reasonable DIY job on ramps or is there anything unexpected I need to look out for.

Your brake hoses will break ... Have a new set ready 46 cm long pipes male fittings either end.
The abs sensors won't budge either... Trace cables back under the rear doors and disconnect there instead.
Marty.

If you're having a new sub-frame fitted, I'd check the state of the trailing arm bearings, the replacement bearing kit's are reasonably cheap, most of the labour is getting the damn things out of the bearing tube.

Hi everyone,

My Multipla has just failed MOT for similar reasons but the corrosion seems to be around the ring where the rubber stop mounts.

I would like to get it off to inspect it but of course... no bloomin' manual!

Is there a detailed how-to for doing this?

Alternatively, is the same suspension/subframe on another Fiat that _is_ covered by a Haynes book (mine is a 55 plate 1.9 JTD Multipla)?

Cheers,
Steve

There is no Haynes manual for the Multipla, best you can do is get a workshop CD off Evilbay.
This shows how it's connected although you have to work out in which order to do stuff yourself.
Brake pipes will break but they're cheap enough to replace, ABS sensors can disconnected at connectors inside the car (I think they're under the trim panels on the floor by the rear doors).
Don't try to remove them from the hubs as they're bound to break and cost a fortune.
Handbrake cable is probably best disconnected at the balancing yoke, whatever is least corroded!
Even if you don't replace the trailing arm bearings, pack them with grease as they will almost certainly need it.
IIRC The nose-job subframe is slightly different to the bug eye, not sure that they're interchangeable, new sub-frame bushes are available on the web.

Do you want to remove subframe or just expose the corroded part?
It's all pretty obvious if you get under it.. But you may be lucky/unlucky with seized bolts shearing etc.
Marty.

Initially I hope to get it exposed to check it but I may then need to remove it.

I am hoping that the small area that is corroded (the rim of the stop mounting) can be repaired.

Cheers,
Steve

HI
If your still in the market for a Turbo I have obtained a Fiat exchange one.
If so, this can be viewed here:
